actually a crime as is ( carrying a knife that size in public)
the two statements are related - but it is a bit complicated to show why ( by carrying it you can show an intention to carty -the two necessary elements of the crime - o never mind)

/// Would this 'stop and search' be directed at people of a particular skin colour? ///
Well it may not be PC to say so, and one may even be called racist or worse, for saying so, but since the majority of knife crime is carried out on and by persons of a "particular skin colour", then yes it may be wise to direct stop and search mainly towards them and in certain areas.

According to the DM article, budget cuts to Police funding is partly due to this huge rise in crime ::::
"Yesterday the Metropolitan Police said its rising offences reflected a national increase in crime rates which has come amid falling crime detection rates due to police numbers and staff being slashed"
AOG....I can see no evidence in thsi DM link, which you posted that "the majority of knife crime is carried out on and by persons of a particular skin colour"

“i thought the sentences for carrying a knife were somewhere in the region of 7 years in prison,”
The maximum is four years, emmie.
“What happened to the proposal that anyone convicted of carrying a knife would receive a long term of imprisonment ?”
It was watered down within six months on being announced. Now simple possession is most unlikely to end up in a custodial sentence provided the weapon is not used to “threaten or cause fear”.
This topic was on the LBC phone-in this morning. Two serving Met police officers contributed. Both informed listeners that “stop-and-search” in the Met is now all but dead and buried. Both considered that the lack of stop-and-search was a huge contributory factor to the increase in knife and gun crime. Of course, they would probably be considered “institutionally racist” by their critics. Personally I would prefer their opinion on the matter over that of somebody sitting in an office suggesting that too many black people are being asked to turn out their pockets.

/// According to my nephews, the carrying of knives is quite common amongst lots of young men, of all colours and creeds. ///
As much as your nephews are perfectly well behaved young men who you must be very proud of, I think that you should not take what they have said as complete fact, read your papers, go on the internet or watch your TV reports.
