the problem with nets is they catch other species apart from sharks... sharks do what sharks do..humans do not need to go in the water...they choose to do so , therefore accept the risks...

These jelly fish, what flavour are they ? Lime ? Strawberry ? Pineapple ?
I've never tried one :-)

We were at a beach in Donegal and there were loads of them, obviously not the killer ones, and my sister got stung every time she went in the sea, they didn't sting me, I felt a bit rejected :-)
I loathe jelly fish, I had dreadful stings all around my mouth from where the fragments of their tentacles got trapped behind my snorkel.

I have frequently encountered various sharks when diving and am still here to tell the tale. Incidents of sharks attacking humans are really quite rare.
I have a large scar of 4 jellyfish tentacles right across my forearm that never tans.
A cull is not the answer, only a wipeout and that would be disgraceful. Use of nets would help. I would guess that this happened in an area where great whites are not expected.
Ummmm: "People are not morons for going in the sea" - no but they are for going in the sea with large fish that will eat them.

Whenever man and shark share the same habitat there is a chance of a "shark attack."
My brother lives in Perth and he told me that a lot of the shark attacks happen a long way off shore to the surfers who have paddled out over a mile off shore and not to people 100 yrds off shore.

Dave
webbo.......all sorts of conflicting evidence......I have read that the majority of shark attacks occur in less than 10 metres of water.
Squad, Id imagine they could happen pretty much anywhere but i was just going on what my brother to me, Im guessing it depends on the topography of the coast as to how close they come.

Dave.
I thought they had shark nets in bathing areas
webbo...exactly. I cannot remember where I read that piece of information.
There's always danger when you go into the sea. My OH won't go in the sea. He's from the west of Ireland...it's currents and rocks you have to worry about there.

Just watching Jaws, and a conversation between Roy Schnider and Richard Dreyfus and Richard Dreyfus says that most attacks happens in 3ft of water and 10 ft from the beach.

How true that is ive no idea but it maybe where you heard it.

Dave.
webbo....LOL....yes probably.
that's what i was wondering, why they can't use larger nets for the sharks, smaller fish, marine life will perhaps go through the bigger nets...
How ridiculous - a shark cull just because a shark was where it should be and doing what a shark does - typical knee jerk human reaction !! Of course it's awful that this poor girl died and mikey's comments is rather crass. I love jth's post.
