I don't think that's true. The problem that Tim Farron had was that he was the leader of a progressive liberal party, and his views on homosexuality can be seen as running counter to what many in his party believe.
It's that schism that was the problem, rather than his faith alone.
Theresa May is a Christian - nobody has an issue with that.
