As a regular buyer of knives I have no problem with this but surely it's &^%*ing in the wind. I mean you can buy them all over the net, how will they stop that? I applaud the effort though.

It won't work. Pointless exercise.
Many of my knives have points.

Last time I bought some was over the Net. Three ceramic bladed ones to see what they were like. Wouldn't have got such a decent price locally.

Seems to be a fair bit of daft, "got to be seen doing something", legislation being discussed of late.
They can't stop it.
If anyone wants to purchase a knife from abroad via internet, they can.
If folk want to buy from Argos, for example, then they'll have to go to shop with proof of id.
Seems silly to me.
Ive bought a couple of knives on line for fishing, these were in Norfolk and one in the north of England, I live in Bristol, hardly popping round the corner to pick them up.

Dave.
How does a child buy online? Purchases are usually by Credit Card, and children are not allowed them? If a purchase is made with a credit card, you cannot blame retailers for not making checks. They would naturally assume that the card holder was proof of being over 18.
The boy who bought the knife that he later used for murder must have used a parent or older sibling's card.

This proposed legislation sounds like a sledgehammer to crack a very small nut.
Gromit, they pay by debit card or PayPal.
Then perhaps debit cards should not be an acceptable method of payment for knives. Problem solved.
Totally unsolved.

I don't have a credit card. Got fed up with being messed about. The forst started applying a charge, the second decided to refuse my card when they sent a new one through and I'm not putting up with that. I have a debit card and that serves.

I should never be forced to be at a disadvantage, treated as a tenth class person, simply because I do not want a credit card.
Gromit...my details are saved on my computer. Stupid maybe but there's only a limited amount of funds in the account (all other accounts are not online) so if one of my kids logged in the could buy anything.
... first ...
sorry but that’s ridiculous. If the knife buyer is buying from website that also has a bricks and mortar shop its doable local to the buyer then its doable (although of doubtful value IMO) but if the age check is supposed to be done at a collection point shop then the check has to rely on whoever is running the shop and there has to be a collection point for the courier service that the seller uses close enough to the buyer. If its considered ok for a shop owner to do the age check then why not the courier who delivers?
...you've omitted the "could", "would", "if plans go ahead" etc from the heading....
it has some merit, but you are right you can buy knives any place, any time.
A pointless exercise. If a youth wishes to obtain a knife he will do so, just as he could obtain a firearm.
