Severn Crossing Tolls
It seems the Severn crossing tolls are to be scrapped next year, and about time. Although perhaps a better idea would have been to keep a nominal charge to cover maintainance. Good news though for those commuting in and out of Wales.

There is a nominal charge for maintenance. It’s called Vehicle Excise Duty together with its much more lucrative cousin, fuel duty (on which VAT is also charged).
I think the last toll fee in Scotland was abolished in about 2008. Now the Welsh get a free ride. Strange that this largesse can be afforded whilst there is still he need to cart vast lorryloads of fivers to Scotland and Wales from England every year. I suppose some of those fivers come from places like the Dartford Crossing. Of course the fees charged for that mile or so of road are no longer “tolls” but “charges”:
“Under the 2000 Transport Act, the A282 Trunk Road (Dartford-Thurrock Crossing charging scheme) Order 2002 allowed the continuation of the crossing fee, which officially became a charge and not a toll on 1 April 2003.”
That makes it sound so much better value.

Hoppy...when the new Severn Bridge was planned, an Act Of Parliament was enacted, to allow this stretch of the M4 to go into private hands, and also to allow the existing Bridge to raise its Tolls annually, by a formula, in order to raise the money to build the new Bridge.
This Bridge, which the authorities insist on calling the Second Severn Crossing, but which us ordinary people call the new Bridge reverts back into public ownership in 2018.
It was initially envisaged the Tolls might have to continue after 2018, but so much money has been generated by both Bridges, that its now planned that all charges will cease next year.
The charges that are now payable have been a bone of contention for many years, as it places a large monetary burden on users, especially large vehicles.
The ending of this tax on coming to Wales cannot end soon enough as far as everybody is concerned.

We travel from London to Wales fairly regularly as my SIL lives in Haverfordwest (lovely part of the world) so I'm glad it's going to be scrapped - just a shame they won't do the same with the Dartford Crossing. I don't know whether this is true, but somebody told me years ago that the Dartford Toll (or charge - What The Funicular is the difference?) would be scrapped once the crossings had paid for themselves - surely they've done this by now?
I know this is the news section, so forgive me, but I've got what I think is a great story about the Severn Bridge. A few years ago, just before Xmas, we we made a trip to see my SIL and queued to pay our toll. The people in front of us were taking forever and seemed to be having a chat with the guy taking the toll. When we finally moved forward we were handed a card by the man in the booth, which we opened and inside it read "merry Christmas to the car behind from the car in front - we've paid your toll".
How excellent is that?
We now do it every Christmas.

deskdiary, no wonder it takes twenty mins to get through the toll, when they are all reading the cards given out - and if it is in Welsh, it's double the time.....look at the length of this message when translated.
