North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has a megalomaniac one-track mind who had been influenced by his father & grandfather, who were North Korean leaders he succeeded. Kim Jong-un is paranoid against USA, with the infantile, egoistic, poorly thought out belief/delusion that striking an US territory will bring glorious victory to North Korea. He lacked insight, by not taking consideration that the likelihood of USA shooting down the North Korean ICBM fired will result in radioactive fallout on North Korea and the surrounding area. North Korea will certainly be shooting herself in the foot.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-40871416 reported, “North Korea has said it is considering carrying out missile strikes on the US Pacific territory of Guam. The North's official news agency said on Tuesday the plan involved firing medium-to-long-range rockets at Guam, where US strategic bombers are based. The UN recently approved further economic sanctions on North Korea, which Pyongyang said were a ‘violent violation of our sovereignty’, warning the US would ‘pay a price".

Jim, //It bothers me though that Trump seems to have essentially jumped to the last desperate measure of a Nuclear (counter)strike almost as a first resort.// I would have thought it fairly obvious that Trump’s rhetoric isn’t designed for our ears, but rather those of North Korea. As he said yesterday he doesn’t have to tell us what he intends to do...

I read on the BBC News this morning (the strip banner thing) that NK is planning on sending a missile to Guam in Mid-August.
No mention of which year though.

Just look at how many wars and skirmishes the USA have been involved in since WW2 !

They seem to think they are the "world's police" and have the right to go in to every part of the world with their power and might.

In Vietnam they used Napalm, dropping it on villages and women and children. More here

https://www.warhistoryonline.com/vietnam-war/history-napalm-vietnam-war.html

They also used Agent Orange, a chemical to deforest huge areas so they could find people hiding under the forest and also destroy their food.

But this Agent Orange got into the soil and water and has caused deaths and birth defects and all sorts of other problems to hundreds of thousands of people.

Read about it here, you will be ashamed of the Americans when you read this

http://www.history.com/topics/vietnam-war/agent-orange

Sometimes you can understand why some "poor" countries "hate" the West when you see what we ("the West") have done all over the world.
Bin Laden ? Can't believe that the US would let anything stand in their way of disposing of a threat somehow

North Korea is the one building the Nuclear weapon and threatening to use it and has been doing so long before Mr Trump got into power. But dont let that could your closed mind.

If NK do launch an attack then the US is quite within its right to go after Kim just as they did with Bin Laden. But at present he is just sabre rattling.

Can you imagine the furore of the anti Trump brigade on here if DT ordered the topping of Kim?

>>But dont let that could your closed mind.

No need to be so rude.

I was merely putting the "other side" (there is always two sides).

I am no fan of North Korea, but it is the USA that has been making and stock piling nuclear weapons for decades, and they are the only country to drop them "in anger".

I does seem to me sometimes that the USA can make all the weapons it likes, but as soon as any other country tries to do the same the USA try to slap them down.

Try to find a list of the largest weapons making companies in the world and I think you will find almost all of them are in the USA.
YMB....you can count me in to that "anti-Trump brigade"

But I wouldn't shed too many tears in Ding Dang Dong was "taken out"

I would, however, have massive problems with the 10,000's on innocent casualties if that taking out involved an indiscriminate attack. DDD has all of SK, as well as Japan in its capability..
Guilbert, //They [the US] seem to think they are the "world's police" and have the right to go in to every part of the world with their power and might. //

In this instance they have been threatened. Would you not expect them to defend themselves?

mikey4444: "DDD has all of SK, as well as Japan in its capability"

Exactly, but less of worries by neighbour China. Why? China has her own nuclear deterrent hence offer protection against being intimidated by Kim Jong-in.

This is an good example how nuclear deterrence insurance policy can work for recognised nuclear powers. Why should UK unilaterally give it up?
If DDD were to attack America, it would show that he is very unwise. But if that same attack was made on China, he would be stark raving bonkers. NK doesn't have many friends but China would appear to be one.

I am still convinced that wiser heads will prevail, in Pyongyang, as well as Washington.
Yes
Mikey, //I am still convinced that wiser heads will prevail, in Pyongyang, as well as Washington. //

I’ve no doubt Trump is talking to, and taking advice from experienced military personnel. I doubt the same can be said for the megalomaniac that is Kim.
This, like the scare before, will all be over and done with in a few weeks and we will be all back to Brexit
Naomi....you may be right, but I doubt it. DDD is just a very silly, immature and spoilt boy. He has his supporters no doubt but there will be many others know what will happen if he attacks the US.

Fingers crossed, anyway !
bit of a Cuba situation !
Mikey, the problem is that in a society such as North Korea, any dissenter who has the courage to disagree with the all-powerful Kim are disposed of. Rationality is not an option.
Better for Trump to speak to Kim Jong-in, in the only language he knows, rather than kowtowing to him, while he gets stronger by the hour.
AOG....from what I saw yesterday, Trump used exactly the same words as Harry Truman did, in August 1945 !

I may be a leftie but I am far from being a dove.

If there was a way in which Trump could uses a short, sharp shock, that would prevent DDD from using his nuclear weapons, I wouldn't dismiss it out of hand.

But more knowledgeable people than me have said that that is far from easy. Its not DDDs nooks that we should be afraid of......its his huge arsenal of conventional weapons, all pointed at SK that we should be careful about.
The problem is that if NK really DOES have nuclear warheads (which is not confirmed but indications suggest they do, prior to what was previously thought) then launching a pre-emptive strike against them would be very daft. With nothing to lose (unlike now) they could lob a couple off and cause exactly the destruction and death we want to stop.
So diplomacy is the only way. It was tried before and abandoned.
It needs to be tried again. No doubt that IS what is happening, and we probably could do without Trump shooting his mouth off, becuae before very long that might not be the only thing being shot off.
As Senator McCain wisely said: if you make threats you need to be sure you can back them up: it also can back you into a corner where there is no backing down without looking weak. That also of course applies to N Korea
Agree Itchy.
The US could use conventional weapons to bomb their installations back to the stone age.
