His whole career has just been either a mouthpiece for his investor mates, lobbyists, or occasionally his church.
Of course, that doesn't mean he isn't ambitious. But it does make me doubt that he has the political capital necessary to pull off a leadership bid. I think it's more likely that rumours about him standing are being floated by the pro-Remain/pro-Soft Brexit faction in the Conservative party. But that's just speculation on my part.

It's a distinct possibility, although I believe him when he says he has no current ambition. He is unflappable, a conviction politician and keen-witted. I would think that when Mrs. May steps down, having done her duty (she can no longer think of herself as another Mrs. T.) he will be high on the list of potential successors. He'd be a good counter-balance to Jeremy C. i.m.o..
If the Tories go for Davis or Rees-Mogg they're done for.
