I think people use terms like that and 'For God's sake' etc purely as exclamations.

Tilly...as everybody else has said, I use it as a figure of speech, especially when I am frustrated, as I was with PP's reply on a serious thread.

It can also be used for its shock effect as can "bloody".

Don't worry Tilly....if I ever feel religion is creeping up on me, you will be the first to know !
