Objections from a new housing estate included "the noise of the bat striking the ball" and "the effort of batting and bowling" !

These "noises" are only to be heard for a few weeks of the yea.. If they didn't like the sound of cricket being played, why did they buy houses so close to a cricket ground ?

Yes, two things nearly all of us agree on. One, we need a lot more housing in this country i order to keep prices at affordable levels and to meet the demands of a growing population. Two, wedon't want them anywhere near us.

says an awful lot about the letter-writer, and none of it is good imo

It's akin to those who buy a house close to a primary school and complain when the little cherubs come out to play at break-time or lunch-time.

Sorry, my answer was about houses but I meant to go on about NIMBYism. Actually I'd have though they'd welcome a cricket ground- at least it means they won't build houses there.

Local factory closed years ago, was flattened and a new housing estate built.
That's fine and dandy.
Local farmer sells land for developers to build houses across the road from afore-mentioned new estate.
Majority of protesters were in the new housing estate.
Pathetic campaign against it : 'Save our local Bambi'

I played on that ground in the 60's and there were no houses near the ground at that time so they must have bought the houses knowing that the ground was there.I hope the planning committee tells them where to go.

I am not much of a cricket fan, but I understand its only played for 4-5 months a year, so it seems to me that these people will to moan about something else, come October !

This reminds me of the old joke about the old lady, living in a block of flats, that dials 999, because someone is exposing him in the window opposite.

The Police arrive and find the lady, sitting on a chair by the window, whimpering into her hanky.

Compensation claims due to industrial noise induced hearing loss is well know,well established, well understood and financially well compensated. This is loud noise over a long period of time, but lesser noises over a short period of time attract less sympathy, but this "Environmental Noise" can be equally annoying.
People's reaction to this type of noise varies from extreme irritation to no effect at all, but in the former case can lead to stress, strain , sleeplessness and a rise in blood pressure.
It is only when one experiences this does one realise the effect of noise and cannot be foreseen before one buys a house in that community.
The residents may well have a case on the grounds of Health and Safety issues.......

Or the people that buy houses half a mile from Heathrow, and then suddenly find that there are noisy planes overhead .....very unexpected !
