I think it's more than that, ymb. Short-term errors and unexpected events (ash clouds and so on) do happen. But this seems to be a longer-term problem: they're not paying enough (some even appear to be Uber pilots, self-employed) so off the pilots go and join Norwegian, who are also a low-cost airline but somehow manage to put them all under contract. So...

It's not an awful airline. It used to be but it isn't anymore.

They've made a mistake...it happens.

It isn't a mistake Ummm.....it has been caused by chaotic planning of their own staff holidays schedules, something that they should have seen coming.

400,000 people are going to be effected by this and its reasonable to expect that the Airline should tell people well in advance, so that they can make other arrangements, if other arrangements are possible of course.
Yes...they should publish it asap but they aren't an awful airline.
Their website says, "Up to 50 flights per day (less than 2% of flights) have been cancelled for the next six weeks.

Your flight is operating as usual unless you receive an email."

It then gives links to cancelled flights from last Saturday to this Wednesday. I've just counted the flights cancelled on each day and it's

16th 80
17th 82
18th 56
19th 55
20th 53

If they think 82 falls in the range of 40-50, is it any wonder there's chaos?
That's one hell of a balls up.

Now I'm no airline executive but has anybody thought about offering to buy the holidays? Just give the wages due plus a wee bit extra to cover any taxes.
I just don't know how they manage to fly. The last flight I booked with Ryanair from Ireland to England was £9. I couldn't even get a train ticket for that.
Or even a coach ticket.
UMMMM, for another £25 they'd have let you sit inside the plane..
I saw an article yesterday that said the new low cost Norwegian airline have recently employed 150 of RyanAir's pilots as they will be employed full time as opposed to Ryan's "contract basis". If that's the case then the holiday mix up story is just bull****
Wondered why it was windy :-)
They've also said they've changed the leave year from April-March to January-December. That meant they had to ask folk to take leave in September and October.

If the cancellations affect only about 2% of flights I assume the same percentage applies to the pilots. If true, could the 2% of pilots not be allowed to carry forward the extra days to 2018 and spread them over the whole year?
They probably have to take the leave due to working time directives and wouldn't be able to carry it over or be able to be paid for it.

I recall that awful man O'Leary using foul language, live on Radio 4, when being interviewed.

Its a complete shambles.
Mikey - when was the last time you flew with Ryanair
Question Author
Ummm....I have never flown with RyanAir, thank God.

Not sure why you are attempting to defend this shambles ?
I have never flown Ryanair.....never met O'Leary, but Mrs sqad who has high standards of travel ease and efficiency HAD to travel Ryanair.
She was impressed......and that is not easy.
Ryanair has expanded worldwide in the last 5 years whilst other airlines have struggled.
They must be doing something right mikey.
I'm not defending the shambles but just like any other business, mistakes are made.

I like Ryanair...I travel with them quite often as they are the main airline who travels from Luton to Knock. Never had a problem with them.
The 'shambles' as you put it is not being defended, Mikey, the airline as it operates normally is.
You say you've never flown with Ryanair so base your opinions on newspaper headlines and second-hand information.
In ordinary times Ryanair is a perfectly adequate carrier offering low prices for many destinations, just like Easy Jet and others.
They've messed this up as they've done in the past, mostly due to poor communication, but they continue to transport thousands to their destinations for little money or fuss.
Question Author
Dougie....all of that I would expect them to be doing.

But there are 400,000 people who won't be transported to their destinations in the next few weeks. I withdraw nothing from my accusation of them being a shambles.
