//West Midlands Police has confirmed the incident is not terror-related but they are keeping an 'open mind as to whether it was religiously or racially motivated'//
So:-
Terrorist attack = No
Religous attack = possibly
Racial attack = possibly
Hate crime = possibly

Police have stated it is not a terrorist attack.Probably religious or racial motivation.
The perpetrator Sunni, inspired by IS, the victim Shia - in which case it could be considered a terrorist attack.
Homeless man - mental health issues?

Doubt it has anything to do with terrorism, probably more to do with religion and race.

Anyone have any idea why a 15 year old was out and about at 1AM anyway?

'The boy's father and brother witnessed the terrible assault at 1am yesterday
Coming back from a service with his father Alba - Ithink!
Alba, he's not homeless. Just jobless.

A tent at the mosque suggests there was some sort of function or event going on there.
thanks both, must clean specs properly before I read links :-)

Still, it's a despicable act.

why? That makes it a religious attack. Unless you believe all religious attacks are terrorism?

/// The perpetrator Sunni, inspired by IS, ///

IS are a terrorist organisation.

So as the father says, it could be a terrorist attack.
Can I have a link that states Dominic Palmer is a Sunni Muslim?
jno, //why? That makes it a religious attack. Unless you believe all religious attacks are terrorism? //

Read aog's post above.
hc4361 @ 09:28 , I wondered about that too, but if he was inspired by IS as the father suggests, one would assume that he is Sunni. On the other hand, he might simply be inspired by their brand of violence. Who knows?

/// Can I have a link that states Dominic Palmer is a Sunni
Muslim? ///

Daesh is a Salafi jihadist militant group and unrecognised proto-state that follows a fundamentalist, Wahhabi doctrine of Sunni Islam.
I think everyone is aware of that, aog. It's the perpetrator's alleged link to that organisation that is in question.
I am making a few assumptions here, but here goes.

Dominic Palmer is not a muslim name, so I am guessing he is a recent convert, possibly while in prison.
Quite a few of the terrorist attacks in the UK came from converts, they may be petty criminals, possibly with a drug habit and end up in prison where, because of their low intelligence, they are easy meat to be radicalised by Sunni extremists inspired by ISIS.

After an altercation between Sunni and Shia youths, the Sunnis send Palmer to attack their rivals and he tries to kill the boy.

I would class that as a terror attack first, a religiously motivated attack second.
Gromit,The police have already stated that they are not treating it as a terrorist attack.

No need to be so shirty Naomi, I was only trying to help on the information that I had read, and for your information how do you know "everyone knows that"?

/// Syed Hassan Abbas was named locally as the victim of the 'ISIS-inspired' stabbing attack outside the Maarif-e-Islam Hussainia Mosque in Herbert Road in Birmingham in the early hours of yesterday. ///
aog. I'm not getting shirty.
I can't see any evidence that this is a terrorist attack at all. But it has all the hallmarks of an attack by one type of Muslim on another type of Muslim.

So, yes... religiously motivated it would seem.

I know that. Witnesses believed it was a Daesh inspired attack. The police have the attacker, who obviously will not be confessing any terrorist link, but will be portaying the attempted murder on inter-faith grievances.
If a Catholic IRA man stabbed a Protestant Policeman 9 times, then it would be terrorism.
