Catalonia wants independence because it thinks, being wealthy, it is subsidising the rest of Spain. So Catalonia gets independence, joins the EU and, as a wealthy member becomes a new net contributor, thus subsidising the rest of Spain which is a net receiver.

If they all seceded then it would only be bits of existing countries that voted themselves out of the EU. They could always try to join in their own right, if they can get agreement. Don't think it would bother the EU much. Nothing seems to, they'd rumble on unconcerned, as they usually do.
not really - they want to remain members.
Catalan is not quite the same as those others it holds a lot of wealth for Spain which is why they dont want it to go.

I suspect any uprising will be swiftly dealt with by Spain and then things will carry on until the next time.
They may want to remain, but they will have left the country that is an EU member State. Whether they'd get back in again is questionable.
The "questionable/doubtful/unlikely" proposition always surprises me: The EU basically wants the whole of Europe to be part of the project to a greater or lesser degree, preferably as full members (if only for reasons of simplicity). To suggest the EU would put obstacles in Catalonia's, Scotland's, etc. way regarding membership is to me not realistic - the UK pressed the "threat" of Scotland ending up on its own outside the EU, and very effectively too (independence referendum campaign - the fear undoubtedly set in among significant numbers) but now the UK will supposedly be much better off on its own outside the EU - what the UK would have done had independence come about can now only be guessed at. Maybe Spain would/will in the same way obstruct Catalonia's membership but that seems to me likely only to be a temporary setback.

What is happening in Poland, Hungary and Czech Republic ... thought they were told to take in migrants/refugees or leave?
Arl, it could be quite a while before any nation could get back in(eg Spain would veto Catalans membership) and in that time it would be pretty rough. Remember these are small States they stand to gain by EU membership (net takers most likely) so the EU may be a bit reticent to let them in. The fact of them being small also is the reason they may struggle outside the EU as opposed to GB which is a big influential Nation(no matter what Remainers say)
Has the Express got so bad that utterances on a minor radio station make it onto their news pages.
Nick Ferrari is a nobody with no qualifications to predict anything, least of all the political future of Europe. He was the Showbiz Editor of the 'Sun'. Before working for the Iranian Press TV which subsequently had its broadcast licensetaken off it.
Thats as maybe Gromit but it is still a topic worth discussing.
Ymb,
It seems we have been discussing the imminent collapse of the EU since this site began. And it doesn't happen.
Catalan will not leave Spain in the near future, but even if it did, it would have zilch effect on the cohesion of the EU. Even a huge country like the UK leaving will have next to no impact.
worth discussing no doubt, but TTT's last attempt was only two days ago

Is that what you predict Gromit?
I've noticed that Gromit's political predictions (including Trump's election) are usually spot on. I'd take them ahead of Ferrari's any day.

To be someone must be a wonderful thing
Thanks jno, my record is patchy.
I predicted (rightly) that May would not get the huge majority she expected at the elected, but (wrongly) I said 25 seats.

Funny what info you stumble over if you are looking.
LBC is owned by the Global Media Group. It's Chairman is former Labour Party Chairman Charles Allen. Who just happens to also be Chairman of the 2 Sisters Food Company, who have been in the news recently of the chicken scandal.
Just looked at Global's Newsroom Twitter account, and no mention of the chicken scandal.

so did you predict Trump gromit? I seem to remember a lot of predictions for Hilary myself.
he did, which convinced me Trump would be elected. As I say, his predictions are good.
Tora,
About a week before the US Election I realised that Trump would win and posted on a thread on AB.
catalexia - that is the state of paralytic boredom that occurs soon after the introduction of another Brexit thread ?

In the film of the book - Fall of the House of Usher -a family was prone to catalexia and the father of the family Vincent Price used to bury alive anyone who began a sentence - I think Brexit .....
