"NHS England said no-one would be forced to answer the question"
As jno has said, the question is voluntary.

"NHS England said no-one would be forced to answer the question but recording the data would ensure that "no patient is discriminated against".
^ isn't asking the question in the first place discriminatory?

well they can't force you to answer anyway can they. Frankly i would find it offensive just being asked especially when it could not possibly be relevant.
What goes on between a man and his nice shiny kettle or toaster has nothing at all to do with a doctor.
aelmpvw....if NHS England plan to ask this question of every adult, over the age of 16, how can it be discriminatory ?
It can't be discrimination if everyone is asked, can it?

Perhaps you could try the alternative approach, TTT, of waiting until your GP answers the question, staring at them intently for a few seconds while half-smiling to yourself, then answer whichever one matches the gender of your doctor accompanied by a knowing wink.

Or maybe not.
//Doctors are ordered to ask patients if they are gay//

I'm not sure that is the actual order but imagine your doc asking that just before your prostate exam
on another thread, SP make the point that in cases of alleged political correctness, it's the 5% of loony trolls that get listened to in making the point. this matter just demonstrates that officialdom is just as likely to defer to that 5%, lest they should be screamed at for being (you word here) ist.

Talbot, what would the doctors make of this guy?
The only way to guarantee no discrimination is for nobody to answer.
It's just the 'questioning' in LGBTQ.
It seems a bit of a heavy-handed approach to be honest. I am always a bit suspicious of quite 'where' the information, once gathered, will end up.
Talbot, what would the doctors make of this guy?

Whoever made the vid should see a doctor of some description.

I have read the linked article carefully, and can find nothing to suggest that this has been forced by any minority group or that 'officialdom is deferring to "that 5%"'.

I've checked and NHS England did work with Manchester's LGBT Foundation, but that doesn't mean that doesn't suggest that this was a PC move, or that it was prompted 'by the 5%'.
TTT

NHS England have said that the data was already being collected in many areas but that the new guidance makes it standard. It has also said that lesbian, gay and bisexual people were disproportionately affected by health inequalities such as poor mental health and a higher risk of self-harm and suicide.

I assume that the data collection is being introduced in order to give clinicians a better understanding of their patients.
In a few years time, the question of sexuality might become as innocuous as 'How much exercise do you take?' or 'Do you smoke?' or 'How many units of alcohol do you drink per week?'

At least with the 'What sexuality do you consider yourself?' we have the option of saying, "I would rather not say", unlike the 'How many units of alcohol do you drink per week?' question which is always answered with a complete lie. (I always halve mine and add 10%).
They know that, sp. They double the units you say and the number of cigarettes.
halving mine and adding 10% would still result in a rebuke from my doctor
//It has also said that lesbian, gay and bisexual people were disproportionately affected by health inequalities such as poor mental health and a higher risk of self-harm and suicide.//

What does "disproportionately affected by health inequalities" mean?
I hope not. When I was asked recently I told them the truth!
