I did try and read all the text in your link AOG, but after the first few lines, I found myself laughing so much I was in danger of a personal injury so I stopped in the interests of self-preservation.

What these achingly over-important dullards appear to fail to grasp is that, by definition, culture does not 'belong' to anyone, and as such it cannot be 'appropriated'.

I doubt that any woman is wearing hooped earrings because she wishes to indicate 'empowerment' - it's rather more likely that she likes them and thinks she looks nice in them, which tends to be the reason for wearing anything - modesty being taken as read.

I am increasingly thinking that articles like this should be headlined with the words ‘cultural appropriation’

That can then serve as a short-hand message to the reader – anything beyond these two words is complete and utter laugh-out-loud nonsense, so save your valuable time and stop reading now.

"Cultural appropriation" is an oft-abused term, both by some of its so-called supporters and its detractors, but I don't think a-h should go as far as he does. At its most basic it's simply about trying to raise awareness of where certain cultural practices ultimately come from.

If people then try to take that awareness and apply a sort of "cultural copyright" then clearly that's taking things too far, but I can't see how it hurts to appreciate better the history behind the things we individually enjoy.
