First we had Boris's stupid remarks a few days, for which he has yet to apologise. Now Gove "doesn't know why she was in Iran"

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-41960006

This poor woman is being held under appalling conditions, and has been for 19 months, and her case is not helped by these stupid, ignorant remarks by Ministers that should know better.

if a politician knows his words will imperil a British citizen abroad, he should keep his mouth shut. if a politician doesn't know what effect his words will have abroad, he should keep his mouth shut. Pretty basic stuff, really. Doesn't affect people on social media, who routinely don't know what they're talking about.

Boris et al may not be able to 'assist' but they ought to be careful not to make matters any worse.
agreed we should not be making it worse but I agree with the above, there do seem to be a unknown factors at work here.
was she arrested/detained upon arrival or departure?
(just wondering)

Isn't is possible that previous behaviour from her whilst in Iran caused some concern?
jackthehat, Perhaps Andrew Marr should be more responsible in his choice of questions in situations like this.

Marr: What was she doing when she went to Iran?

Gove: I don’t know… there is no reason she should be in prison in Iran as far as any of us knows. No evidence has been produced which suggests she should be detained …. and I will take her husband’s assurance that she was on holiday. (Or words to that effect).

A fair enough answer. Did the OP or Gove’s critics actually listen to the interview?
" more to this story than meets the eye " excuse !!!! ? Boris and gove are still idiots though, .
^Pardon?
So when Marr asked Gove

Marr: What was she doing when she went to Iran?

Gove: No comment.

Yep, that would help emensly.
for once i totally agree, Boris should be out there begging for her release.
Emmie, this was posted earlier by Haggisdj:

//from the Gov.uk web site.

As a dual national you can’t get diplomatic help from the British government when you are in the other country where you hold citizenship. //

This lady holds dual citizenship.
naomi

ok, but i do think everything that could be done, should be done, even by back channels if need be. surely there is a Boris counterpart that can be brought into the mix.
Hopkirk @ 0918; "Please can someone give an explanation............"

The lady works for London based Thomson Reuters Foundation, an aid organisation (i believe) who, among many other things, do train journalists. However, they do not operate in Iran and the Chief Exec of the company, Monique Vila, stated that, "Zaghari Ratcliffe, a project manager, had never trained journalists in Iran."

Perhaps that is where the buffoon got the idea she was. And, where has the other buffoon been all week to NOT KNOW that she had gone to Iran to see relatives with her child?
I was completely wrong. I had not been following this story very closely and I assumed that the woman’s daughter had remained here in the UK. It seems she had accompanied her mother and can now see her for only an hour or so each week (having forgotten how to speak English).

I don’t condone Iran’s actions in keeping her incarcerated seemingly having done little or nothing wrong. But regretfully I feel that, family or not, it was hugely irresponsible to travel to such an unstable country with a young child. Not everywhere in the world is like Tunbridge Wells.

Have i been missing a wonderful experience , not having visited Tunbridge Wells ?

Next weekend away - destination , Tunbridge Wells .

Nice to see that, broadly, most of us agree.

Still no explanation why Gove said "he didn't know" when he should have known.
Mikey, why do you think Andrew Marr asked the question at all rather than simply ask what was being done about it? We all knew why her husband said she'd gone to Iran - including Marr I presume.
Far be it from me to defend Gove but you can't make him know something if he didn't already know it.

This has been proven down the ages through the use of various tortures by sundry organisations.

Gove was asked a simple question, primarily to find out if he was going to give the same (wrong) answer as Boris.

Instead, he choose to give another wrong answer....he said "he didn't know" This is despite our Governments official line that Nazanin was there on holiday, to show her new daughter to her Iranian relatives.

As others have pointed out, he seemed rather keen to protect Boris, than give a truthful answer. His answer made it look as there was an ulterior reason for the visit, and you can be sure that the murderous, undemocratic regime in Iran would have listened to the reply very carefully.

What amazes me here is that, given what Gove did to Boris 2 years ago, I am amazed that he had the gall to try and protect Boris at all !
