"The protection would signal that the UK is treating the case as a formal, legal dispute between the UK and Iran."
Why on earth should the UK become embroiled in a "formal, legal dispute" with Iran. Anybody going there (and she should be particularly aware having originated from there) should know that they are prone to throwing foreigners in jail on the flimsiest of evidence and with little or no justification. Presumably one of the reasons she left there was because she was none too fond of that.
Finding herself in the Chokey should thus really not take her too much by surprise. Agreed, the legal process in Iran is not quite the same as ours. But as I said in an earlier question, not everywhere in the world is like Tunbridge Wells.
