(Originally saw this in the FT, was first non-paywalled link I could find).

The European Commission has thrown its weight behind the UK government in opposition to the proposed US tariffs on Bombardier's jets, arguing that "there is no legal basis to impose definitive duties."

Interesting move. Do you think this is being done purely in line with their obligations re: UK as an existing member state, or (more cynically) have the Commission perhaps been discreetly promised something in exchange for their support?

sorry I'm just getting over the first 3 words in your title! came over all faint!
No it is to protect the future of Airbus and the new C Series. Without the Bombardier components, the EU part of the manufacture will be put in jeopardy. So the "Brussels" obligation is purely in their own interests.
Isn't Bombardier a Canadian company not a UK company?
Yes but they have a huge facility in N.Ireland that makes the wings(I think) for the Airbus and is due to make the fuselage for the new C series aircraft. Boeing have protested that they face unfair competition from Bombardier because of the support received in grants and Government aid. Bombardier acquired Short Bros. Aircraft makers of Belfast in 1998.
