Not sure it can be a gun fight if only one side have guns.

Other that, a stupid, pointless question.
In the OP link it says that there was an 'exchange of shots' between Afghan migrants (I think they were all Afghans).

How is a stupid question?

People were shooting guns and ramming police. I have had two near misses with migrants (or really crap French drivers who know nothing about driving) driving recklessly.

I often stop at hotels in Calais and there is a large migrant and police presence, so who is to say what could happen if in the wrong place at the wrong time?

Anyway Gromit perhaps you should go to the probably Gypsies thread if you think this is a pointless question.

Thank you, jourdain.

>>> Earlier in the day five migrants were wounded in an exchange of gunfire between groups of Afghan migrants in Calais, which officials blamed on violence between traffickers.
Might be an idea to take an alternative route if you can.
I have just returned from my trip to the Pidou offy in Calais this week with my Christmas booze.
Your so called ‘question’ is idiotic. No problems either side of the channel, certainly no wild west.

Did you stay overnight?
I'd definitely be staying in England in future and doing all my shopping in Rutland. As any true Brit should.

What happens if Macron scraps the Treaty of Le Touquet, of course, is a trickier question.
Talbot,
It is a trip I do 2 or 3 times a year and there has never been any problem.
On this occasion we went there and back in a day, but on previous excursions we went to see the war graves, and the plots of my grandma’s (fallen) brothers.
Good to know that somebody stands between the UK and bloodthirsty god botherers from another age.

So if there's no trouble when you go, there is never any trouble?
Is that really how it works?

I assume then you think the French are being over cautious by having armed soldiers rather than armed police at the chunnel.
Talbot, you can't blame the French if they have no experience of driving in Saudi Arabia - be fair.
Question Author
Fair point, Choux.

I had no idea people still do booze cruises
Booze cruises in Saudi Arabia???

Well blow me down with a feather ;)
Can we at least give a semblance of accuracy on this thread?

The expression is knock me dahn wiv a fevva (with optional Treva) :-)
Well I'd rather you did as I'd worry about you.
I usd to go to Calais three or four times a year. ABout six years ago I was waiting for my ferry in the port when the area was "steamed" by migrants who tried to storm aboard a ferry. I am robust but it was a frightening experience and not one I plan to risk again. I don't care how "nice" it is alleged to be now. I won't be venturing there until all the illegal migrants are shifted (i.e. never).

PS. For reasons I have expounded many times previously, there is no chance of the French rescinding the "Le Touquet" agreement (which, incidentally, is nothing to do with the EU but is a bilateral agreement between France and the UK).
douglas, that did cross my mind as I typed, but I was brought up proper ;)
Hi Talbot

If you don't mind a drive down to Dieppe, around 108 miles from Calais, and a 2 hr car journey, then travel back...Dieppe to Newhaven, which is just short of 4 hrs......longer, but if that bad over there, and the police can't guarantee travellers safety, then maybe you should pick an alternative route. Be safe.
The Calais, of old, is sadly no more.

// So if there's no trouble when you go, there is never any trouble?

Yes. I have been to the Manchester Arena literally hundreds of times without being blown up by a mad suicide bomber. The events you want to portray as the norm, are in fact exceptional circumstances. I went to France on Tuesday and did not encounter Afghans shooting. As I suspect tens of thousands have done this year without any event. Of course anything is possible, just not very probable as you want to present it.
