No one would deny that Putin "won" in Syria, but it if fanciful to suggest that IS is on its last legs in Syria because of Russia. Russia certainly helped, but not to a significant degree. It is to his advantage that there happens to be an even greater evil in Syria than Assad, although actually to many Syrians Assad is actually the greater evil. His great advantage is that he only murders his own people and doesn't threaten the west. In that, he is half like his protector :-)
