anyway
Once worked for a certain company - one of the Sales Reps would pop into the office, pop his hands on the shoulders of those seated at their desks and give them a quick kiss on their cheek.
Didn't matter if you were female or male, it was just his way of saying 'thank you' to the 'team'
No offence seemed to be taken by anyone.
Maybe a different time..?

The answer has to come from employers. For example, in the case of the "table of wealthy, suited men" who "asked if she had an intimate piercing" ... they should simply have been thrown out. I wouldn't want to eat at a restaurant that tolerated that sort of language towards staff, so it should be bad for business. If people aren't allowed to smoke in a restaurant, in part because of the effect on staff, then how the heck can this sort of behaviour be tolerated?
If the employer won't change and, in the short term, can't be held to account, then people must simply choose to work for better employers.

"I learned somewhere that the word lady originates from the times in which women owned nothing. To be a lady meant that you were the property of another person. When I hear someone use the term ladies these days, I cringe. I think it sounds so condescending.

That sort of thing, you know, a trap for unwary men trying to be nice, polite even. Akin to holding a door open and ending up getting a mouthful for their trouble.
Suppose it depends on mood or something, we'll never know for sure.
