Eh, possibly. But never mind. China's likely to be planning to send its own men to the Moon, apparently.
An interesting aside re the pen/pencil debate.

hey yogi

Is that moon made of Blue Stilton ?
Hi Bazile,

Better than gorgonzola!

Make it so ☺
I have been thinking about this today. I am of that generation of boys, that were totally taken over by the whole space thing, in the 60's. Those early missions and the moon landings themselves were unbelievably exciting.

Now I am not sure that the eye-wateringly large sums of money couldn't be put to better use, although I am open to being persuaded differently I suppose.

Even I wasn't born then. I think it's interesting, but also a massive waste of money.

I see it like this ... We're on a rock wanting to go to another rock, we will use materials on this rock to get to the other.
money?
Meh!
I understand Trump is going to be strapped to the Nose Cone of the rocket, is that right? what about his hair.
Makes perfect sense now, talbot :-). Is there WiFi there? I wouldn't go otherwise.
TWR....he can put it in his pocket......should be OK in there !

"I'm not sure I'm familiar enough with the difficulties of manned space travel to comment usefully right now on whether it's easier to get to Mars from the Moon or from Earth" - that's what I'm saying I don't think it's a stepping stone but a great practice run to iron out issues.

mikey: "Now I am not sure that the eye-wateringly large sums of money couldn't be put to better use, although I am open to being persuaded differently I suppose. " - as a socialist you don't have much of a scooby do you? what to you think happens to the money paid to all the workers by governments?
I support space exploration but I can't see this one getting off the ground.
Nasa is dedicated to robotic exploration not manned flight .So it will mean a total change of direction . This will cost hundreds of billions of $ and have to be approved and funded by Congress, possibility of it being passed ZERO ! The initial study alone is costed at $4.5 Billion
Then it proves nothing, we did it over 50 years ago with basically the same technology. We would be better trying to find a new way to power a rocket or space probe.
It is no more than a Trump vanity project to try to improve his disastrous popularity ratings.
He will be long gone before there is even a basic plan ready.
It will provide nothing we do not already know or can find out cheaper and quicker from automated or robotic landers.
If approved it will drain funding from a far more important project, putting men on Mars. W
Can anyone please translate TTTs later post into something the Queen would recognise as English ?
Let me help out:

"..as a socialist you don't have much of a scooby [Scooby-do = clue] do you? what to you think happens to the money paid to all the workers by governments?
NJ...thanks....your years on the Bench have obviously helped in the translation process !

So....TTTs normal drivel I notice !
I think one of the most important things we can do is reach out to the stars, and so whatever sum is used (within reason) is money well spent. It ought not be thought of as a budget used for something else because we ought to be budgeting for many things. What are we here for but to go out and find out what we can ? Had we not done so in the past we'd still think dragons existed a few miles up the road at the next village. Meanwhile all our eggs are in the one basket, called Earth, we have to take those first shaky steps off into our local area.
Money paid to all the workers by governments go to feed and cloth etc. their families, thus entering the economy, and circle round until it is extracted again by the government using the tax system.

Have you been smoking pot again?
Robots cost a fraction of sending humans and can stay much longer.
