It is indeed a tricky one. I have never stayed in a Travelodge but from the reports I have read a mud hut seems by far the more luxurious option. Just a couple of aged hippies who haven't noticed that this is 2017, not 1967.

Whilst I am usually behind strict enforcement of Planning Regulations when it comes to development in 'open land', I do feel quite sorry for this couple.
They are living off-grid as much as possible and when they move on (whenever that proves to be) they will have left very little detrimental imprint on the landscape, if any.
There are mechanisms whereby individual developments *are* permissible subject to a strict set of rules........this ought to be looked at with that in mind.

I can't see the problem with them making their home there. They're doing no harm. If the council wants to put people up in a Travelodge I'm sure they'd find plenty of takers.

No. They simply have a different set of priorities from most of the rest of us.
They appear to be content spending their evenings weaving baskets by candlelight rather than wasting time, energy, resources and money diddling about on the computer until the small hours....

I have some friends who run a very successful business and live in a copse they own, off grid. They are not in the slightest 'nutters', what a derogatory term to use.

Ummmm, every single atom of every piece of matter in the entire universe is composed of Chemicals, you and I are 100% chemicals,composed of the (92?) naturally occurring Elements .
As an Industrial Chemist who got a degree way back in 1973
( when getting a degree was really hard work/study ) I just can not understand the preoccupation with the idea the 'Chemicals' are to be feared when they constitute 100% of all the matter in the entire universe.
