I don't know this area at all, but it seems a bit strange, given the time of the day when the accident happened !

Ice?
City centres and suburbs are very busy at 1am most weekends, but especially so at this time of year.

Zacs....I am long in bed at 01:00 AM !
It only takes one lunatic driving too fast to take out half a dozen cars and some people do tear about there like maniacs. That being said nothing to suggest speed was a factor in the article but then that's a lot of fatalities if everyone was driving at 30mph.
Traffic light controlled junction seems to point to a red-light jumper. Pictues seem to point to excessive speed involved.
That’s fairly irrelevant to the story, Mikey.
I retract the bit about the traffic light controlled junction - pictures on BBC website of closed junction misled me. DM pictures show accident on underpass below junction.

Thanks Zacs !
Google Streetview shows 40mph limit on that road; DM pictures of damage seem to show this was being exceeded.
Actually, it’s completely irrelevant.
Underpass entrances such as this, sadly, can create a pinball effect with cars careening off the walls on either side multiple times.

An awful thing to have happened.
However this happened it's so particularly devastating for families just before Christmas. Horrific.
I'm confused Mikey, what do you think is strange ?
Dreadful incident whatever the cause.
What an awful thing to happen- so sorry for their families.
yes speed definitely to blame here and you dont get thrown out of a car wearing seat belts ! some of the worst driving ive seen ever Birmingham and i have to say mostly by young Asian youths male and female
We went to Birmingham last Saturday to visit our daughter and went out for a meal to celebrate her birthday and our wedding anniversary. We drove through those tunnels in a taxi and could not believe the amount of hooting and honking by people trying to change lanes. There is so much building work and demolition going on in the centre of Birmingham that a lot of the roads and side streets are closed. It was a nightmare. All the traffice seemed to be going through these tunnels. A ten minute journey took over 45 mins and it the end we got out and walked to the restaurant. Never again. Thank goodness daughter does not drive as I'd be worried sick.
That is a very, very busy road 24/7 and nearby roadworks have added to the traffic using it. Lots of people coming out of pubs and clubs needing to get home so there is nothing at all unusual about the amount of traffic.
This underpass is used like a race track at night, I know very well, some vehicles go down it ,doing 60 to 70 mph in the late evenings.
I know this stretch of road, if the traffic is quiet enough it's a fast stretch.
