Tried 'findmypast', as it is publicised so much, only to find the box for your ancestor's date of birth only goes back to 1898!

Is this true, or have I got a dodgy website?

1837 and births started to be registered in the UK, but I'm unsure when it became compulsory. You take what you can find.
