Germans seem to be living through a period of over-compensation for the errors in recent history. Hopefully this can be addressed before it's too late.

I believe it's an update on what came into force October 2017.

Can’t think why she was banned for that I must say :-)
Jeez ...
This is the thing with social media and freedom of speech issues. It’s now a lot easier to say what you like and say it moreover to a wide audience very quickly. This inevitably means that there are a lot more occasions when stuff will get banned thus giving encouragement to bogus claims of ‘the end of freedom of speech’ etc
.
I’d be more concerned about the capacity of social media to spread untruths and false news. That was the sort of thing writers like Orwell feared and satirised so well decades before.

yeah you can say things which attach legal liability
so what ?
id you say at a police man - it is a fair cop - I robbed that bank at gun point !
do you think for one minute that you could say -
hey hold on - my right to free speech means that you cant touch me
or I have explosives and an unlicensed hand gun at my house ....
no you cant come in and look - I have the right of free speech
( er in my case - both are untrue but I dont think that makes a difference ) - as ever it depends where you draw the line

Presumably the change in the hate speech law in Germany was passed by the German Parliament which was democratically elected. So it is not the end of rule of law.
We obvioysly did not leave the EU because Germany changed one of its laws, so the supplementary question is irrelevent.
The UK has had similar hate laws for many years with prison sentences of up to seven years for those breaking the law.

Facebook and Twitter have removed the posts to avoid a £44.3 million fine.
// Germany is set to start enforcing a law that demands social media sites move quickly to remove hate speech, fake news and illegal material.
Sites that do not remove "obviously illegal" posts could face fines of up to 50m euro (£44.3m). //

I don't think that was the part of the message that was deemed 'the speech'.
Do you?
Khandro - no it's not the end of the rule of law in Germany. Far from it. It's the application of the law as it stands.
We have similar laws in the UK, so asking whether our split from the EU is a smart move doesn't make any sense, seeing as our own laws regarding hate speech will remain in place after Brexit.
Also, from the article:
Von Storch criticized that Facebook took action, long before the investigation found any results, let alone a judge had found a verdict “This is the end of the rule of law.”
Nope...the same thing happens on the AnswerBank. If you post something which violates the Site Rules, that post will be removed. Facebook has rules which its members must follow.
Facebook doesn't have to wait for courts to rule on content.
The statement is stupid.
