This is the thing with social media and freedom of speech issues. It’s now a lot easier to say what you like and say it moreover to a wide audience very quickly. This inevitably means that there are a lot more occasions when stuff will get banned thus giving encouragement to bogus claims of ‘the end of freedom of speech’ etc

I’d be more concerned about the capacity of social media to spread untruths and false news. That was the sort of thing writers like Orwell feared and satirised so well decades before.

Presumably the change in the hate speech law in Germany was passed by the German Parliament which was democratically elected. So it is not the end of rule of law.
We obvioysly did not leave the EU because Germany changed one of its laws, so the supplementary question is irrelevent.
The UK has had similar hate laws for many years with prison sentences of up to seven years for those breaking the law.

Khandro - no it's not the end of the rule of law in Germany. Far from it. It's the application of the law as it stands.

We have similar laws in the UK, so asking whether our split from the EU is a smart move doesn't make any sense, seeing as our own laws regarding hate speech will remain in place after Brexit.

Nope...the same thing happens on the AnswerBank. If you post something which violates the Site Rules, that post will be removed. Facebook has rules which its members must follow.

Facebook doesn't have to wait for courts to rule on content.
