There is something I don't really understand about this. If we assume that all these millions of people that buy these plastic bottles every day, start out from home every morning, why don't they fill an empty bottle and take it with them ?

I appreciate that in some areas, tap water might not be as nice as we have here in Wales....London for instance, but now that the pollution that is caused by trillions of plastic bottles being discarded, its time for a change ?

“Like you said...not all tap water is nice to drink.” No water – tap or otherwise – is particularly nice to drink. It has no taste (other than that of the various pollutants that are in it) and its only purpose is to slake one’s thirst. “As I see it, buying small amounts of water is entirely a modern problem, caused by people having more money than...

Here too Minty. The last one that served my streets couldn't sell his milk when he retired in the late 90's.

On a related subject....I was hearing the other day that those white plastic milk bottle are recyclable, but the different coloured tops, blue, green, etc are not.

So, a simple question needs to be asked....why don't the milk bottlers use a cap made of the same white material as the rest of the bottle ?

The type of milk inside is quite clearly shown on the label after all.
Those milk bottle tops can be recycled and used to make parts for wheelchairs but collections are few and far between.
There's nothing wrong with being prodigiously proud of oneself...
^^^ Sorry, wrong thread.
I have more recycling than regular rubbish these days !
Same here, Minty.

I also compost a lot of stuff.

NoM....but why include a cap that can't be recycled easily in the first place ?

I chuck the coloured top in the non-recyclable bin and put the bottle in the recyclable one.
water put in an open container in fridge will lose all of the purifying chemicals (chlorine etc,) overnight
Ive no idea, Mikey, it doesn't really make sense.

Our local council is very picky about which plastics it will recycle. They won't take margarine containers, yoghurt pots or fruit punnets and it pains me to put those items into general waste.
And..try explaining the difference between plastic and polyethylene to my OH!!..
Question Author
NoM....I don't understand why there should be so variation with different Councils. Swansea Council take quite happily all the yogurt and margarine cartons, as well as most other plastics....not sure why every Council can't ?
Are you sure Mikey? Have you read the list?
Our council takes yoghurt pots and margarine tubs. It doesn't collect food waste or glass though, as some councils do. We take glass to bottle banks.

Ummm...all clearly explained by the Council ::::

https://www.swansea.gov.uk/pinkbag

Please note we are currently delivering reusable pink bags to residents across Swansea to use instead of the pink sacks. Read more about the change.

Pink bag collection
You can use pink bags for plastics. We will collect them on your pink week.

Pink bag (reusable)
Some areas of Swansea are trialling the use of reusable bags to collect plastic. More information on this service is available on our Reusable pink bag trial.

To ensure your bags are collected for recycling:

Use the pink bags that we provide for free
Put your bags out for collection between 7.00pm on the evening before your collection and 7.00am on the morning of your collection day
Wash and squash all plastic items
Only use pink bags for plastic items
Use our recycling and rubbish collections search to find out what day we collect your bags
Don't let your efforts go to waste

What to put in the bags
Yes please
You can put all the following items together in your pink bag:

Clean plastic food trays
Loose plastic bottle tops and caps
Plastic margarine/ice cream tubs
Plastic yoghurt pots
Plastic bottles
No thank you
Do not put any of the following items in your pink bags:

Bubble wrap
Cling film
Crisp packets and chocolate wrappers with metallised plastic (shiny) insides
Dirty items
Electrical or electronic items
Film lids (such as from microwave meals)
Larger items (such as garden furniture)
Plastic bags and carrier bags
Polystyrene
I can't remember a time when there was a smashing people up with bottles epidemic, Pixie.

If someone is intent on doing someone else harm they will always find a way.
We have a separate glass bin to paper, tin, plastic...no to polyethylene, polystyrene..window envelopes, waxed cartons or food trays..
Mine won't take plastic food packaging or plastic lids so our bins fill up quite quickly with the amount of packaging food comes in. We're only allowed two non recyclable bags a week.

Anyway...it's time for the inventors to invent something new.
seems odd mikey, the problem is the throw away culture, people don't like to reuse a plastic bottle. I refill mine t home all the time.

Like mikey I can't understand why some people need to carry around a bottle of water these days, when there are so many outlets where one can visit to quench their thirsts if they find it so necessary.

When this water purchase craze was introduced we couldn't believe it, "buying water"?????? you couldn't make it up.
