if galleries remove all artwork by artists who were philanderers the walls will be bare ...
The plot seems to be well and truly lost.

The problem with the tools of the deveil: TwitFace. The minority get represented out of proportion as the lazy media just assume that is the thought of the masses.

It is getting far too silly - (I am just up and that is the best that I can do)

All this me-me, me-too stuff belittles true sexual assault and predation.
you make it sound as if he wanted to paint the women. But that's not in the story, is it?
Khandro - But he didn't simply ask them to undress - did he?

"Late last year, several women told US media that Close, who is handicapped and relies on a wheelchair due to spinal artery collapse, had asked them to undress and made unwanted advances and explicit comments when they visited his studio."

You omiited the 'made unwanted advances and explicit comments' part from your OP.

Maybe you should read your own link before you post it?

And if you have read it, please don't edit it to make it apear as though the issue is more trivial than it is.
It's entirely up to the National Gallery of Art in Washington whilst his behaviour is under doubt.
That's some slippery slope, from world class artist and photographer to leching perv in a wheelchair.

He has at least had the good grace to more or less apologise for perceived offence.
I thought thist was the National Portrait Gallery four victorian photographers - Julia Cameron and Carroll

Carroll used to take piccies of girls wivvart clothes - but Alice Liddell of Alice fame is there - clothed

but in New York - is this a case of shooting the messenger innit and burning the message -

Do we refuse with ornate phrases about obsecnity to look at Dadd's pictures because he butchered his father ?

and E A Gill was pretty odd - wivviz models and when they wouldnt oblige - his kids .....

NY Times; "Two women recently told The New York Times that Mr. Close had asked them to model naked for him, requests that made them feel exploited and uncomfortable."

They were models for Pete's sake, that's what models do! I've hired scores of them.
If they didn't want to undress all they had to do was say "no", there's thousands of models who are comfortable with the job and the guy is invalided in a wheelchair and can't attack them anyway - it's all rather sad really, and doesn't warrant the closure of a major exhibition in a public gallery.
If the claims of unwanted advances (as you say that would be limited somewhat by his disability) and explicit comments are untrue - then it is ridiculous.

I'm sure another Gallery will host his exhibition gladly.

The potential for a physical attack may be limited, but not eliminated, as you state, and an attack does not have to be physical to be distressing, and to warrant action.

Is this the legal system of the modern age?
I found this an interesting read on the wider subject and it does raise the broader question of how we view the artworks that hang in galleries etc and the stories behind both the artists and the sitters.

Without being a fly on the wall, it's hard to comment on what he did or didn't do and whether it was warranted.

Yes, it's a good article Mamya and I could add many more to the list.
But why stop at artists? What if the builder who put the extension onto your house was found guilty of historic rape (which Close hasn't been) should you tear it down?
We could debate all manner of scenarios - my answer to the one you pose above is - No.

If he has done anything untoward, then the models should deal with it in the correct manner, we have no clue what was said or done.
I now have a movie playing in my head where the alleged guilty party pursues fit young things in his electric chasin' chair while Yakety Sax plays in the background.
That should brighten your afternoon Douglas.
Khandro - Are you going to answer the points I have made?

Or are you hoping if you ignore me I'll go away, because I have exposed your selective take on the issue in question?
My afternoon could be no brighter, I have tea, Club orange biscuits and the wit n wisdom of Answerbank in all it's glory.

My cup overflows.
Nice - Cappuccino and a ginger nut here.
