When are we going to accept that our current software ability is insufficient for this application? at least Uber has the sense to halt their tests.

If this stuff Is that good, why are we about to spend billions on infrastructu re and signalling etc. for HS2 which presumably will have drivers... and run on rails..... early 19th century technology.. ... Cars are late 19th century technology and have barely changed in a century. The methods of propulsion, control and stopping them is the same as it ever was...

"when you proudly and utterly incorrectly announced that "software hasn't really changed since the early days". - it has not fundamentally it's just linear processing on a faster and faster scale. Even on a parallel processor or MPP machine the instructions have to be done in order. The assembler has to create the object so that even if there are 1000 processors it has to be done in the correct order. That's what I mean by that.
A further observation I would like to add to this thread (although not directly related); in my work I believe that I am reasonably proficient (not making too many f-ups).
But what I do does not (by and large) involve intelligence in the true sense of the word – what allows me to be proficient is the in-depth knowledge I have of the subject matter, gained over many years – and applying that knowledge. Plus I know exactly where to go to get relevant additional data/information when needed.
Of course a computer system could easily be given the information I have in my brain (and more) – and do a better job than me. It only needs someone to develop the required software with a system of easily prescribing the required inputs and outputs. A further requirement would be that the system is updated where required (with changes to legislation etc affecting the roll).
And there’s the rub – however once AI masters this, I’ll be out of a job, as will many others.

Starcraft isn't a closed system, though, which is why I mentioned it. It's different from chess because it does involve imperfect knowledge and the "fog of war", or similar concepts -- which is why it's reasonably regarded as the next step in AI. I'm surprised that you weren't aware of this, whether or not you've played the game (I haven't either).
Again, in your last post, you are describing problems that humans can be (and often are) equally bad at. This sort of double standards is maddening. AI needn't be perfect in order to be better.

Incidentally, I don’t know if you saw this story about autonomous flying taxis being tested
