Am Driving By Car To Malta Mid-April

Driving my car to Malta (London, start, through to Pazzolo in Sicily to pick up ferry to Valletta). Have lots of time and reckoning on about a week for the trip. Love to drive the Stelvio Pass; take in the Ferrari works at Modena and maybe another look around the Colisseum in Rome ... Vehicle is a 2014 Fiat 500L, complete with mountain bike on the roof!

Oops, sorry about that ... any tips on driving through France/Germany/Austria would be most welcome. I live in Cape Town and we also drive on the left ... not too fazed about that, more concerned about breaking the law(s) in various countries. Definitely not worried about mad drivers – such as Italy ... you should see what we put with here in South Africa!!

Wait until you get to Malta though. They don't drive on the left or on the right - they simply drive in the shade! The rule at junctions is simply "He who has the loudest horn has the right of way".

Watch out for the buses too - most bus drivers take both hands off the wheel to cross themselves whenever they pass a church - and there's a church on every corner!

They adored roundabouts but never quite found anywhere to practise hill starts apart from the bridge over the railway line

My advice would be to be careful - to the point of paranoia - about not exceeding the speed limits in Switzerland and Italy, foreign drivers are pursued for (very steep) fines, mercilessly.
