Velodyne, the firm that designed the sensors on top of the vehicle, said it was "baffled" as to why the crash happened, insisting its technology was capable of spotting Ms Herzberg. PMSL!

I was laughing at a "tech" co that was "baffled" - I'm not, 2 possibilities only, a) the sensor did not sense. Or b) the software did not act on the data, simples!
It's which and how come, that likely has him baffled.
Everything possible should be in logs. They were monitoring everything, I trust.
This technology will happen. Autonomous vehicles have been invented. They're not going to uninvent them.

"Autonomous vehicles have been invented. " - err I think recent events and many other happenings have confirmed that they have not been invented.
Aeroplanes develop technical problems and crash. That doesn't mean they haven't been invented.

no but not even the current makers are claiming they are "autonomous". Especially when they can't see a pedestrian or a 30 ton truck. It's a nice idea that I for one would love to be feasible but in the end it'll turn out to be phlogistanic.
You'd better get used to it. This is inevitable....
