According to a Freedom of Information Request filed by the Guardian (and supported by research from Crisis), the number of homeless people dying in the UK has doubled in the last 5 years.

Why do you think this has happened? Do you think anything should be done or should we just ignore it?

Anyone can become homeless through no fault of their own - I very nearly did once. There will be organisations near to you which help homeless people, please support them.
People who sell the Big Issue are usually at some stage of recovery, or starting to get back into earning money, and have some shelter...whether B and B, the Sally...or any number of other provisions. I believe they purchase the copies and can keep the profit. Not a get rich quick scheme.
It must be a thankless task. In all the time I have passed Big Issue sellers I have yet to see a single person stop and buy a copy.

Our local one is a pushy pain in the bum, I usually advise him to
'have sex and Travel'

I buy it sometimes, if I have change that is.
Ummmm---that's a point . Having change. Takes us over to the Cashless Society thread. What will happen to the Big Issue sellers then ?

Point taken. Not happened up here yet . It all seems so cold and impersonal. I won't be using it.

If there's even one homeless foreign person among the dead, they will have "had an impact", Talbot. I'm not sure what we're supposed to infer from that, though.

Krom you asked

What I am clearly saying is there is the usual cowardice or
''I'm a nice person so I will not mention the 'i' word''

Bedroom tax... ✓
Tories...✓
mental health...✓
councils...✓
Police...✓
Tories...✓
Rent increases/ lower wages... ✓

All will have had an impact but why ignore.

immigrants?

In that case, yes, immigration clearly has an effect - one of the better-reported instances of a homeless person dying on the streets was Brazilian. Unfortunately, immigrants don't come into the country with a sign above their head saying, "I will become homeless and die", so there isn't really anything to be done about that part of the problem except have zero immigration at all (which is undesirable and impractical for obvious reasons). The other factors you list (even to some extent mental health) can to some extent be mitigated or even eliminated.

Why do you appear reluctant to accept that?
Of course there is a way to stop it without stopping immigration full stop.

I'm not reluctant...
spath,// i personally have never seen a foreign homeless person.//

You’re not moving in the right circles. According to a document published by Westminster City Council only 37% of rough sleepers in the borough are from the UK, which means the other 63% … aren’t.

spath, I know it isn't absolutely up to date but it serves to illustrate firstly that contrary to your experience foreigners are among the homeless, and secondly that a disproportionate amount of the problem - approximately two-thirds - at least in that borough can be directly attributed to immigration.

spath, I've never said that.

yeah but no but - he was shot in the head wasnt he ?
There are many reasons for homelessness but it has become like the NHS - a political football.

Until we can get enough people wanting to solve the problem rather than blame the Tories or the Police or whatever (and indeed admit uncontrolled immigration is part of the problem) we will never solve it.

Not sure what the way forward it, but the way most on here are viewing it then nothing will get done.
