I'm sorry if this might sound uncaring Why on earth are Britain getting involved in a conflict thousands of miles away? So what if Assad uses chemical weapons, why do the UK have to get involved? It is going to put us at risk of terror attacks, and God forbid Nuclear War. It is not our problem? Germany, Spain, Portugal, Italy are not getting involved

// You see the difference, don't you?// v-e

as in you see the difference in War and War
yeah wow - AB in full flow today I see.

Something from my youth comes back. Yes, got it, the "Peter Principle".

Do you understand "principle", Peter?
Sharon: War has never solved anything! PMSL have a day of, do you speak German? Do you think that going to war with Germany didn’t solve the NAZI problem? Anyway never heard so much BS in my life from some on this thread. This ain’t War this is chastisement. The US does not need us militarily they need us politically and anyone else they can get, even the French. We’ll fire a few missiles and run a few sorties. The Trumpster can claim us as allies and everybody is happy. Vlad will make a lot of noises to Assad thinks he cares and it’ll all blow over, simples.
It is the Syrian rebels who are to blame, why do they continue their un-winnable fight, whilst witnessing the suffering of their people.
Here is some interesting reading dated from 2013.

I can only agree with everything NM has said.
The western world cannot stand idly by when chemical weapons are being used, it’s that simple.
Furthermore, the military action we undertake will not involve boots on the ground so the ‘not in my name crowd’(most of whom invariably enjoy democracy and freedom at the expense of soldiers but couldn’t summon the courage and fortitude to walk through a recruitment office doorway) can stop the hand-wringing, unless of course they’re prepared to see images of hundreds if not thousands of men, women and children suffer horrific death and injuries.
When it comes to a conflict with other countries, Blair and Corbyn are the bad men,
while Thatcher and May are praised and applauded .
" You see the difference , don't you " Do you understand the" principle?"
"Fools rush in where angels fear to tread"

It is ludicrous to ask Politicians to make these sort of decisions for a top salary of £120, 000 per annum.

Negotiate first......then hammer them with missiles.
.// Yes, got it, the "Peter Principle". //

" It states that the selection of a candidate for a position is based on the candidate's performance in their current role, rather than on abilities relevant to the intended role. " wiggy

um even I cant see the link to Syria.
are you .... suggesting that the men in power in 1938 ( Chamberlain, Daladier, Benes -[ who all dey den? ] werent the men for the job and were re-elected to power because of what they had previously done ?
But every election is like that innit ?
I have to admit I didnt think of that

or as Cronon said in Antigone (yeah dat one - )
who can tell what a man will do until you give him powa?

interesting point anyway

// " You see the difference , don't you " Do you understand the" principle?"//

I think of servicemen's gravestones engraved wiv
" I died for someone elses principles which I never really 'saw' to be honest "
// The civilised world cannot stand by when chemical weapons are used, it’s that simple a principle. //

or else it may be used on YOU
and we have already had a little practice on that one in Salisbury
// It is ludicrous to ask Politicians to make these sort of decisions for a top salary of £120, 000 per annum. // someone

hey every body I have given Tereez a £100 000 pay rise
and so we can expect some really good decisions now !

did this man really get froo med school ?

those domiciled in Thpain will be aware that King Fay-lippay is taking no interest in all this.
so what are we going to do, hand Syria over to "islamic nutters" to punish Assad for using chemical weapons?

Screwing up the last Iraq war led to the creation of Isis. Personally, I think the cure was way worse than the disease, but perhaps others disagree. Anyway, have we learnt anything from that failure?

As none of our Servicemen are conscripted, I tend to see: Doing what I love, volunteered and signed up for.
Every serviceman/woman knows that death is on occupational hazard, it goes with the territory.

/// can stop the hand-wringing, unless of course they’re prepared to see images of hundreds if not thousands of men, women and children suffer horrific death and injuries. ///

And if this affair kicks off with a horrific war "are you prepared to see images of hundreds if not thousands of men, women and children suffer horrific death and injuries" not thousands of miles away but here in this country?
Obviously you have not experienced war, but I have and I wouldn't wish that experience on my fellow country men, women and children.
\\As none of our Servicemen are conscripted, I tend to see: Doing what I love, volunteered and signed up for. //
This of course ignores the many hundreds of thousands who died in the first and second world war.
So what do you suggest AOG?
We stand idly by and appease the despots?
Turn a blind eye?
Does the name Chamberlain mean anything to you?
Indeed Vulcan, but I thought we were discussing a 21st century conflict involving our Service men and women who volunteered for Armed Service, not conscription as in WWI and WWII.
I must admit with all the propaganda being bandied about by both sides I am unsure what is the truth these days.

Were chemical weapons used? I think I would prefer to wait until it could be verified before launching any attack, for one it really doesnt make sense for Assad to to it right now, they are nearing the end of the battle so why tempt the wroth of the West? Doesnt mean he didnt thing that way but who really knows?

However, if anything kicks off I suspect it will be just a few missiles lobbed about and a few sorties as suggested above with the Russians being warned and staying out the way whilst making noises about the aggressive West. Neither side looses face and the only loosers are the poor innocent civilians that get caught up in it all - again.
Why is this any worse than barrel bombing? Or attacks on civilians? Or any of the other horrible things the Assad regime has done?

Furthermore, why do we suffer under the delusion that we're powerful enough to do anything? We're not a great power. We haven't been for ages. Our conventional forces are more or less nonexistent. The responsibility for this kind of thing does not lie with the powerless - it lies with the countries that lead the world. I don't know why we keep ignoring it, but that ain't us anymore.
ChillDoubt, PP spoke of "Servicemen's gravestones engraved wiv I died...
Rightly or wrongly I assumed he was referring to conflicts in the past not of the future. However if there ever was another war, I'm quite certain conscription would be re -introduced.
