It seems obvious to me, that if more material is used in the making of these larger size garments, one should expect them to cost more.

Not a champion of the consumer then, good that some are.
Togo - that is mean and uncalled for and honestly plain nasty!
togo - not everyone who is big is a glutton - ( i am and that is because i'm a glutton) but not everyone, some people take medicines that make them put on weight or are heavy through medical conditions, I have a friend at the gym who weight trains and shops in the larger sections as she needs to to get tops to fit her shoulders....
It's not about the amount of material used.

Talbot //The extra material will be minimal compared to the labour cost// - Sorry, I misunderstood your statement. I thought you meant that material costs don't change, but labour costs do. What you were saying is that the cost of the material is trivial compared to the cost of labour - agreed.
Looks like we're gonna need a bigger pin.
I see the medical condition argument has reared its head....

A very small minority of people are fat because of a medical condition. Most people are fat becuase they eat too much and move too little - it really isn't rocket science, if somebody takes in more than they burn off, guess what, they'll put on weight.

It never ceases to amaze me how fat people are treated like victims. Smokers aren't considered victims so why are fat people?

Contrary to Islay's suggestion of body shaming (a ridiculous turn of phrase if ever there was one), we almost appear to be celebrating fat people as though their size is normal. There's an advert on the TV at the moment with a number of fat girls twirling around in bras and knickers advertsing underwear. By any objective measure they are all fat - the underlying unspoken message being 'there's nothing wrong in being being fat' Well actually there is. Leaving aside the aesthetics, being fat is bad for a fat person's health and is costing the NHS gazillions, and therefore fat should not be celebrated.

I wonder how long it will be before being fat becomes a protected characteristic under the Equality Act.

If somebody feels 'body shamed' because they are fat, surely the answer is to lose weight - I don't buy the 'I'm happy being fat' argument. Nobody would rather be fat then slim.

It's the language used that gets up my nose as well. 'Plus' size, 'Curvy' size. If they were re-labelled 'Abnormal' size, you never know it might encourage people to look after themselves a bit better.
Once you have been body shamed then you can decide if its a valid comment.
I have been spat at in the street, comments made on my size all because i am fat!
Oh and if losing weight was simple then we would all do it!
once you are past a certain weight it is difficult to move and then it doesn't matter what you do if you can't move you can't lose weight.
A little human understanding goes a long way!
//I have been spat at in the street//
That is disgusting. No one should have to put up with that.
No one should, that's true - sadly we shar this world with some nasty individuals.
Well Nailit when you become obese you have all feeling removed and are not hurt by what people think or say to you!
deskdiary - fat girls twirling around in knickers, isn't about saying its ok to be fat, its saying look, this is how these knickers will look on you, here have some attractive underwear.

body shaming does not make people lose weight, its more likely to make people comfort eat. Its not as simple as eat less and move more, that has been proven many many times and people who think that have to much flab in the brain department :-)

I'm happy enough to say I'm overweight but I'm no slouch in the exercise department, i go to the gym & swim on average 5 times a week, recently came 7th out of 358 in a gym challenge that was incredibly hard work - but i do suffer depression and when the gym doesn't lift my mood i comfort eat/drink.
Would i like to be slimmer, yes but it's probably not going to happen so i would like to see clothes available to me at a decent price and i'd like to see what those clothes look like on people like me size wise other than the slender or skinny models, as the way the clothes hang on them, they don't on me...
I have been as low as size 10 currently 24/26 I used to walk a lot, swim and stay a lot more active. I have dieted on and off . All my life the classic yoyo dieter.
I am now really interested in the latest work coming out of the genetics labs regarding what makes it harder to maintain a healthy weight. It may be faulty or missing genes affecting things like appetite and satiety. If this is the case it may be possible to develop an effective gene therapy.

It's hard to have willpower when your only pleasure comes down to a choice between two chocolate bars.
I have also been abused in the street, had waitresses offer me the menu and point out the diet options v
With a smug expression, had to listen to unkind comments as I pass people does it make them feel better about themselves?. Had people make very wrong assumptions about how I live and been turned away from places because of my size. One instance being in Covent Garden where I was asked to leave a shop because ,"it gives the wrong impression having smelly fat women touching the clothes" I don't think it is too much to ask that I could buy clothes that fit without being ripped off, being treated as a human being would be nice too. I hate my size, but because I have other priorities right now it has to wait.
I'm a big person, size 18 but being tall get away with it to some extent.
I eat healthy food but can't lose weight. Perhaps the guy calling people gluttons would like to have my limited mobility caused by severe arthritis whereby I can't move about quickly enough to burn off what I do eat.
I would love be eight stone again but it's not gonna happen now :)
Rowan and McFluff, your posts are enlightening. I would hope that we are educated enough nowadays not to judge people unless we have walked a mile in their shoes.

That isn't what the issue was in store Spath.

Obviously two items of greatly differing sizes take more material but not two the same size in different ranges.

Great posts above Ladies, thank you.
Spath the issue is not that. See Mamys's post regarding "ranges".
At the other end of the scale, I've spent most of my life eating more than three average people can manage between them, and it's only recently that it's started to show (I've spent the last few months living on takeaway and barely moving, with predictable results). Prior to that I seemed to be able to burn off all the calories with little effort.
