Bowing Or Curtseying To Royalty

If you were to be introduced to the Royals, how would you feel about bowing (if you're a bloke) or curtseying (if you're a lass) to them? I wouldn't mind too much if it was The Queen as I feel she's earned respect, but I don't hold most of the rest in great esteem. As for Kate and Meghan, they're basically commoners who Wills and Harry happened to fancy, so why should anyone now and scrape to them? That's my opinion anyway. What's yours?

I remember being told when I joined the RAF that when saluting an officer I was not saluting the man but the office/position he held.

Absolutely no to curtseying......when I worked for Save the Children I twice turned down lunch with Princess Anne......the curtseying or kowtowing was one reason....x

I have no objection to keeping in line with this country’s traditions especially as a slight bow of the head doesn’t put me to any trouble. It’s no big deal to do it

More a quick bend of the knee than a proper curtsy for the ladies these days, I think. It’s a shame you feel that way, guess, as Anne has been a fabulous patron for that great charity.

People get invited to events and have a choice whether or not to go. If anyone who gets an invite feels strongly about any aspect of the event then they can decline the invitation. Its no big deal either way.

I've only ever bowed in karate and judo, when you both do. I would never curtsey for royalty or anyone else. If that's what they insisted on, they just wouldn't get to meet me... :-)

I don’t think there is any insisting. When Dh and I met Prince Phillip we didn’t bow or curtsey. He started a conversation with my husband and it just never happened. Ditto when my mother met the Queen mother, different occasion. As I said, either way no big deal.

Anne has been fine, Hc....and the lady I asked to go in my place is British, a Royalist and despite some difficulties did much for the charity behind the scenes so it was so much better for her to go and get a huge thrill which she still talks about.....

I didn't need a "thank you for your work" lunch....wouldn't have appreciated it and I just don't bow or curtsey....
Save the Children is going the way of many big charities and the waste of a huge sum of money on a jolly for those at the top was my reason for resigning some time later...

Instead of lunch I took Year3 on a day out at Foxton Locks....that was more memorable and enjoyable for me so, no, it's not really a shame...... :-)

My mother brought me up to think we were all equal whoever or whatever we were. I would have to be very afraid to bow the knee to anyone or forced in some way.

Jackdaw, the RAF have some very odd customs. Back in the 70s, i attended a 3 month photography course at RAF Cosford in prep for a forthcoming tour on the Regimental Int Section over in Belfast. As i was walking past one of the many flagpoles on the camp, some sort of bugle call was sounded, which i ignored and carried on to my destination. I was pulled up by an RAF Rupert and scolded for not saluting the flag!! Threatened to put me on a charge if he caught me disrespecting HM ever again.
