this weekend marked the 34th anniversary of the "battle of orgreave" -
https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-south-yorkshire-44500039

given that after all this time, most of those (whether police, governmental or strikers) responsible for the decision making at orgreave will be long gone from office, or dead, what exactly would an inquiry achieve now, or any time in the future, save for the spending of an awful lot of cash?

Strange sort of cure. It's like introducing one strain of deadly bacteria to compete with another, whilst the body they've on is ravaged.

there were certainly geological problems as a result of the strike Krom - there was a pitfall on the A1 near Pontefract
would any in the anti TGL brigade like to suggest an alternative? SFF, if it was not for TGL we'd all be in a bread queue as one of the many Soviet states and the Berlin Wall would still be up.

Eh?
I'm quite willing to credit Thatcher with some things, but I think it's a bit far-fetched to suggest that she played some sort of decisive role in the collapse of the Soviet Union.

2 words kromo, Greenham common.
looks like the won't let me make an argument properly.
Yeah, I've read the article. It's magical thinking to suggest that she somehow 'accelerated the process' of Soviet collapse. Let's not be fantasists, eh?
"Strange sort of cure. It's like introducing one strain of deadly bacteria to compete with another, whilst the body they've on is ravaged."

That's not quite so, OG. Te body (the UK economy) survived and thrived. The second "deadly bacteria" unleashed on it (Mrs Thatcher's policies) turned out not to be so deadly after all but some of the bodies appendages (the coal industry) fell off.

As it turns out Mrs T's prescience as far as the coal industry is concerned was quite uncanny. She must have known that coal would eventually be demonised as it is today when she launched her strategy. Quite honestly she did the mining communities quite a favour. How anybody could consider what must be one of the most awful jobs on Earth as their chosen career ("My father went down t'pit and so did his father before him") is beyond belief.

No inquiry into Orgreave necessary. Scargill mobilised thousands of his troops to shut the plant and prevent people going about their lawful business. The police had a duty to prevent that and they did so admirably. There would have been no battle had the 5,000 flying pickets not been there illegally.
Oh, for Christ's sake. Can we please stop this ridiculous arbitrary deletion of answers for no reason? What exactly did 3T say which contravened Site Rules? He just copy-pasted from a link he posted earlier - like we all do pretty much constantly. This is getting really irritating.
The coach companies made a few quid transporting the pickets, not heard them complaining.
i sympathise kromo, we are trying to debate, I don't think that post contravened any rules.

More than one appendage fell off. Industry was devastated as Monetarism was the mantra, society's existence denied, many on the dole, greed approved of, in fact encouraged. Dark times for the limbless patient.
"Dark times for the limbless patient."

Who would have most certainly died but for the treatment.

There's always a reason, it's rarely anything to do with the Site Rules though.
If it's not based on the Site Rules then it is arbitrary.
we arent inquiring are we ?
there goes anouther £50m

"should we inquire ?" is just a rhetorical question (?) as in
"roll up roll up fat lawyers, here is another money maker!"

//Must we be reminded again of that dreadful Woman , Thatcher .//
Thatcher's take on this sentiment was "do we really have to go thro all this again?"
that was scrawled on the refusal to review the B'ham non-bombers trials and faked convictions

said in the film by Corin Redgrave. ( but true as in - it was said)
