It's been announced that women who commit lesser crimes, shoplifting etc should not be sent to jail. Discrimination? Ridiculous idea? Asking for trouble? Your thoughts

no idea why women are to be treated differently to men in this area. So yes it's discrimination plain and simple.
I think that people who commit crimes, where one is not at danger or causing distress to others in society, should not end up in jail. It is a waste of tax payers money. They should save the cells for murderers and rapists, and simply ban the shop lifters from town centres and supermarkets for a set period of time.

To enforce this, we could use facial recognition CCTV cameras which inform security guards in the area.
I personally don't think anyone who commits lesser crimes should go to jail, it's expensive and entirely self defeating, but women who are incarcerated are ore subject to mental illness than men, they are more likely to be the sole carer for children who are then taken into care and more likely to suffer long term social effects once released.
Because they tend to be petty crimes.

TTT - women are often the main carer for children.
If a custodial setence is warranted then a custodial sentence should be applied. No going soft on criminals.
They aren't getting off scott free.
Then they should have been incentivised to be more responsible in the first plsce; ummmm
In an ideal world.
ummmm

Actually, I think this is the correct link:

Total discrimination. There should be no difference.

If you are the main carer then I would argue you are not responsible enough and will only bring your kids up into a life of crime and therefore should no longer be the main carer.

I have no problem with no jail for minor sentences, providing a rehabilitation course is attended, but it should be 3 strikes and then jail otherwise it is seen as a green light to commit those crimes.

If you can't do the time don't do the crime.

Quite simple.
As an ex con, Ive seen many, many men in prison who, in my opinion, should not have been there either. Men who have obviously been mentally unwell and have committed relatively minor offences. So why is it just females that need help and not prison?

// but women who are incarcerated are ore subject to mental illness than men//
Got any stats for that?
Not saying that youre wrong or anything, just that I would be interested in seeing them. Thanks.
Maybe I suppose it depends on how many petty crimes someone has committed regardless of gender.
Quite. 3 strikes and out.
