If you were sitting on tube carriage, or on a bus, and through one door walked a very old person, with a walking stick, and at the other end, a woman in her third trimester...and there were no seats free, who would you give up your seat for?

Interesting.

I asked the same question to three colleagues (male) at work, and they all said they would give their seat to the elderly person because (I quote), "It's not the old person's fault that they are elderly, but the pregnant woman had fun getting to the state she's in."

I just...can't...
Hmmm...then your colleagues don't know just how much fun I've had getting old, Sp... ;-)
I never sit on public transport, to avoid these dilemmas ...
Yes,without a second thought.
in reality standing on public transport should not be an option. Buying a ticket should buy you a seat. if you buy a ticket on National Express you get a seat. ALL public transport should be the same. It follows therefore that if you get on to a train or tube & there are no seats you stand whatever your condition or status.
I'd give up my seat for either. Elderly 1st though.
Being the ultimate gentleman that I am I'd turf two young people out of their seats and invite them both to sit down ;-/
I have told a couple of young'uns to stand up when there have been infirm people struggling to stand upright on a bus.
I've luckily never encountered that situation. I did have a young lad give me his seat and I was neither elderly or pregnant. I was just older than him. He's been taught well.
I use the Tube 2 or 3 times a week and often see elderly or pregnant women being offered a seat, I do myself if I have one.

When I was on crutches I was always offered a seat.

So I am surprised at this bloggers findings
I get up for anyone who needs it more than me, although I was shocked by the reactions of some .... I also noticed quite often once I did it a few others might .

One lady who looked old, was very thin, and carrying a couple of heavy bags looked at me and told me not to be so rude as she was younger than me. I said probably but if you fall you could break something while I am very well padded, and your bags are a hazard to anyone trying to use the aisle.
once there was a young lad of about 10 sitting next to me , taking up 2 seats with his huge bag..it was one of those long bench seats...when an elderly couple with sticks got on... he just sat..till I said in a VERY loud voice.." this young man has been reserving your seats for you..isn't that kind ? " he shamefaced got the point and stood...
That is so much like the sort of thing I do. Families with very small children are a good target, Maybe the little one would like to sit on your lap to make room for someone who needs the seat.
lol Rowan...the older I get the less I care about being PC !
