All those cheering the language act - do you therefore agree that those Brits that go and live in Spain and Thailand etc should also learn the language?
How can a person learn the language if they are made to feel excluded? We can hardly say that Britain has been welcoming towards certain groups of people.

yes. my parents lived in france and travelled regularly in spain. officialdom did not deal with them in English - it was either learn to communicate, or pay for the privilege. and that's how it should be.

but mushroom I would say your parents were the exception rather than the rule as I have witnessed myself on holiday in France, Spain, Germany and throught Europe, the 'older' persons move there and do not make an effort to learn the language.
Anotheoldgit - I am afraid I will have to disagree with you - I think attitudes of many towards certain groups have been anything but welcoming. Suggesting that a group of women in a playpark could be peadophiles just because of what they are wearing is one such example. Would you suggest that a group of women in a play park wearing hot pants and crop tops were prostitutes?

no. why should any official body pay to communicate with someone who can't be bothered to make the effort? that there might be many of them doesn't change anything - why should it? if people want to live in language-exclusive ghettoes, let them. but they need to understand they'll need to make their own arrangements if they need to communicate. one of their own number perhaps? or pay for an interpreter.
