They were entitled to defend themselves, owing to presumption of innocence, and we clearly cannot countenance a world where only the well-off can mount a legal defence.
I should assume, anyway, that the money is ultimately going to the lawyers rather than to the men concerned.

My family is being hounded by a Bangladeshi fighting deportation and funded by legal aid.
