He should have known, yes - he does now thankfully.
Bless....He was so used to the people who voted for him casting multiple votes that he thought it was kosher. Just a cultural "misunderstanding" move along the bus please.
good ole Layba eh!
Yes, he should have known. It's beyond me how anyone does not know the simple fact that 1 person = 1 vote. It is taught in schools - or at least it was. Anyone who has grown up here should have simply absorbed it. Don't know if this chap was born here - but if involved with politics he should have educated himself as to the basic rules.
There used to be an unofficial election slogan in Belfast, Vote early, vote often.
Of course there was Sandy. How could it possibly go wrong?

Hope you are well and full of plans once more.
Mind you, we have only had "One Person, one vote" (in General Elections, at least) since 1950.

Pretty pathetic for a Councillor to do this sort of thing.
isn't election fraud just another part of the make-up of certain cultures?

isn't the uk supposed to be multi-cultural?
"It is taught in schools"

Ah, but in what country? I have no idea where this cheating p o s came from but many of our new arrivals didnt got to school in the UK, in fact they come from countries where this is the norm,.

Surely this is fraud so he should be stripped of his Councillor status and send swiftly to jail.
And deported.
I'll second that Spice.
"Electoral Commission rules allow people to vote twice in the same set of council elections if the votes are cast for different councils."

Oh. So we *still* don't have one person, one vote, then.
Aren't we supposed to vote early, vote often then ?
When I was at Durham University I could only vote once in a parliamentary election but twice in council elections, once in my home town and once in Durham.
We see that one man-two votes is permissible in special cases under UK law.

However, it is a general legal principle under other judicial systems. Take the case of "blood money", an alternative "punishment" agreed mutually between the perpetrator's and the victim's families in a murder trial, to the prescribed punishment under the sharia penal code, the hudood.

Cop this:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diya_(Islam)

The interesting bit (under the heading "For women and non-Muslims" being:

"Diyah[blood money] is not the same for Muslim women and Muslim men in sharia courts, with Muslim woman's life and diyah compensation sentence being half as that of a Muslim man's life.[Muslims and non-Muslims are treated as unequal in the sentencing process, in cases of unintentional deaths."

Like that, do you? Diversity is our strength? Coming to a town near you - if it ain't already?
These are not fanciful antique relics like Indulgences, this is current legal practice in Saudi Arabia and the Islamic Republic of Iran. And will be endorsed by every Saudi funded cleric in Europe.
Very interesting but I'm not sure that has anything to do wih this case VE.
Yes, I vaguely being able to vote twice in council elections while living away at university. ( In this case of this councillor though i think there is no excuse- he should make sure he knows the rules). But I think the facility to vote twice seems wrong as it is more liekley to benefit those who can afford two homes (and perhaps those who are claiming housing benefit at two addresses I suppose). maybe time to change it to prevent any similar "misunderstandings"
/// Leader of the Labour-controlled council Allen Brett said he was "disappointed in councillor Rana's error". ///

Disappointed eh? I wonder what his response would have been if it had been a non Muslim Tory Councillor?
I suspect that in that case the "Tory" bit would have been more relevant.

In any case, it's kind of sad to see so many people in this thread rail against this man's culture when, as we've established, voting twice in local elections is perfectly legal in the UK under certain circumstances.

I think the term 'disappointed' has a wonderful variety of meanings.

It's like 'helping the police with their enquiries' which could range from sharing a cuppa and a chat with the sergeant, to a rubber-hose / soundproof room interface.

In this instance, being 'disappointed' is the public reaction - the private one is, I have torn off the councillor's ears and served them to him in a seeded bap!
