Would it be possible for every debit and credit card holder to register a photo of themselves (somehow verified) so when a payment is made in store the photo is displayed to the cashier or webcam on self check outs?
Would anyone object to this if it could stop some of the card fraud?

Good idea, but there's never enough staff at the self check outs to make this effective. I've been known to wait a few minutes until someone can get their lazy backside down to me to see that there's nothing in the baggage area that shouldn't be.

Finger prints might be a better idea.
And it would play havoc with me sending young RR up for the shopping.
so its on a webcam.....what then?

At self checkout your face could be compared to the photo by facial recognition technology using a webcam. Wouldn't need human intervention.
Sounds a massive system cost to me.
Plus it's a back door identity card.
If banks issue cards they should ensure fraud isn't possible, or bear the cost when it proves otherwise.
Otherwise it's good old, never out of fashion, cash.
Like the airport?

Well, if Stansted is anything to go by........
Oh worse, now you're suggesting Big Brother camera monitoring of citizens.
No....I use my OH's card and I'm always sending the kids to the shop.
I don't think that the losses through those conduits are enough to bear the cost of the system

It would be impossible to prevent card fraud without some form of identification and banks do bear the costs unless the card holder has been negligent.

If only cash couldn't be lost or stolen, and if only cash gave you the same buyer protection as a credit card, OG, I would use cash. If a pickpocket nicks my money there is no recourse, except possibly from my insurance then see the premium rocket.

It could be possible to register more than one person to the card so your family members could use it
And fingerprinting all citizens too !
What is this thread ? A propaganda attempt ? Vote Fascist for a third glorious decade of total law enforcement ?
Whilst they did with me; I think you mean banks do bear the costs unless they can get away with claiming that the card holder has been negligent.
What about on-line shopping?

Not so long ago I was burgled and they stole my laptop. This was about 4am and the 1st thing we did is cancel our cards. I have my card details saved on some sites.
You’re generally covered for card fraud anyway. Anything which makes buying something more complex will not be accepted by the public or retailers. That’s why contactless payments are so popular.
In theory it's a good idea, but in practise, not so much. Small retailers would probably struggle with the cost of the added system, and market stalls etc. that take credit cards probably wouldn't participate at all.

Then we have the new GDPR rules.
In some countries the cards actually have the owner's photo on it, exactly like a driver's license except the photos I have seen are sharper than the ones on a UK license - maybe their license photos are also better (wouldn't surprise me).

Online shopping could use a webcam too, ummm. Most pcs, laptops and smartphones have one built in
Question Author
rocky, the screen would be incorporated in to the card terminal - no added cost for the retailer.
But I'm camera shy :-)
