I understand the frustration which the islanders feel when they are arbitrarily relocated for the convenience of mapping - but when even the OS says "This is Bonkers" (I paraphrase slightly), then surely even the numpties at Holyrood should realise they're making themselves look daft?

I'm sure i remember an almost identical question on here from around 3 months ago
I recall suggesting we leave the Shetlands unboxed but put the mainland in a box and put it closer to Shetland- would that have been acceptable?
I was thinking of this thread when TTT asked something similar in May

Thanks FF - missed that at the time - it actually comes into force today it seems.
this is what I said last time this came up:
"It is a well known cartography technique, when you see something in a box you know that at the scale it would not be on the map. No Idea why the Scottish "parliament" thinks it needs messing about with. The Scilly Isles are often boxed, as is Hawaii, no confusion abounds there. "
if they cant use a box then they'll just do the map to scale and Shetland wont be on it at all. Do they prefer that? kin ridiculous.
They should have just told them that it wasn't the islands that have been relocated closer to the mainland, but the other way round.
What's the prize ?

Ridiculous. OS maps often box stuff to improve use of space. I have seen maps where peninsulas have been cut off and boxed within large blank sea areas (e.g. Land's End in map of SW England) to improve use of space. It's just a convenient convention.

This rule is really bonkers IMHO.
gawd elp us, even canary is in agreement! what a load of old pony! all that'll happen is that Shetland will cease to exist on most UK maps.
I like Shetland ponies.
///gawd elp us, even canary is in agreement! what a load of old pony! all that'll happen is that Shetland will cease to exist on most UK maps.///
Why? It only applies to any documents published by Scottish public authorities

///The final rule written into the bill requires the islands to be "displayed in a manner that accurately and proportionately represents their geographical location in relation to the rest of Scotland" in any documents published by Scottish public authorities.
However, it does note that authorities can avoid complying with this if they provide "information" about their reasons.///
any map that includes the whole of Scotland will have to show Scotland half the size it otherwise would so that Shetland can be shown in the same map in the same scale. Completely radio.
Have you tried their famous fish dish Tora?
