Yes, sentence does seem short. There is probably more of this sort of thing that goes on than is ever found out.
I am puzzled by a couple of things-
(a)if the patient was a dementia patient I am surprised about the bit that said: When asked by police whether the doctor had assisted with her financial affairs, Mrs Belham told an officer: "I think she just helped herself." Would her testomony be reliable?
(b) if she was childless who were her grandchildren?
She was carefully chosen. No close family. Probably would have got away with it if she'd been patient enough to wait for her death before starting to rob her.
I know that doctors no longer get the respect that they did in years gone by - it is probably good that we don't blindly follow the medical advice without question.
But to get to her position she must have studied for years, and now she has ruined everything that she worked for just to get some money.
I am always surprised when a doctor commits a serious crime - maybe I expect higher standards from them.
If she is dealing with vulnerable and/or mentally ill patients it makes her crime much more distasteful.
