Should We Look To Restrict The Use Of Our Major Roads During Rush Hour Or Permentantly?
29 Answers
As I'm currently covering around 700 miles a week mainly on motorway and dual carriageway this is one thing dear to my heart.
What I have observed is that HGV's are the major (not the only before someone gets on their high horse) cause of hold ups. So should we restrict them on dual carriageways and motorways say between 6:00 and 9:30 and 16:00 and 19:00 ?
Alternatively perhaps as a start restrict vehicles not doing 70 to the left hand lane only? In conjunction with this it should be illegal to restrict HGVs to below 60 as this is what often causes the problem?

Zacs, all that can be moved overnight or outside of rush hour. As I am sur you know.
In addition why does the Army have to move slow moving vehicles on Friday night rush our?

No because they’d clog up smaller roads instead.
The inside lane is already there for slower moving traffic.
The link is about turning some A roads into motorways, which is a sensible idea. Very slow vehicles are banned from there for everyone’s safety, not for the purposes of allowing speed merchants free rein.
Tora has a point. Often problems occur when a lorry travelling at 59.9 mph attempts to overtake one doing 59.8 :-)

In Croatia, HGVs have restrictions on when they can travel on motorways and main trunk roads, particularly between June and September. This only works because they move a lot of freight by train. It simply wouldn't work here. I used to use the motorway every day to get to work and back and while they could be a nuisance at times, I learned to live with it. The biggest problem I had was lane hoppers, tailgaters and those who thought the middle and outside lanes belonged to them. I used to leave plenty of time for my journey. I remember one day on my journey back home, seeing people belting down the hard shoulder because of queuing traffic. The police pulled them all over and gave them tickets. It's the same with the morons who belt down the outside lane and pull over to leave the motorway at the last minute. Most of those I saw doing so never gained any advantage as they were continually braking and getting held up. People complain about the cost of fuel, then go down the motorway at 80mph plus, wasting fuel at a rate of knots.
