Should We Look To Restrict The Use Of Our Major Roads During Rush Hour Or Permentantly?

As I'm currently covering around 700 miles a week mainly on motorway and dual carriageway this is one thing dear to my heart.

What I have observed is that HGV's are the major (not the only before someone gets on their high horse) cause of hold ups. So should we restrict them on dual carriageways and motorways say between 6:00 and 9:30 and 16:00 and 19:00 ?

Alternatively perhaps as a start restrict vehicles not doing 70 to the left hand lane only? In conjunction with this it should be illegal to restrict HGVs to below 60 as this is what often causes the problem?

Thoughts Ladies and Gentlemen?

just stop them going in anything other than the inside lane.
How do you think your petrol gets to the petrol station, or the coffee to the machine inside the shop, or the coat you ordered on line last night to the shop for the following day?

Leave five minutes earlier, don't hog lanes, don't brake like a lunatic and don't be a richard.
That's about all (barring accidents) that's needed for free flowing traffic.

The 'richard' one's the key though so it'll never happen.

yes, thats pretty much what I meant TTT.

White knuckle ride on a bike with these idiots in their trucks I can tell you.
also introduce a minimum 50mph limit on motorways to stop doddery old people from forcing all the trucks to overtake them. Oh and stop this *** silly leap frogging down the road with unnecessary lane changes and make it legal to pass on either side. Sorted, next!

Don't drive the Motorways in rush hour then Douggie? It's not 5 mins earlier - I've tried and hour and still a problem. Queues caused by HGV's.

Zacs, all that can be moved overnight or outside of rush hour. As I am sur you know.

In addition why does the Army have to move slow moving vehicles on Friday night rush our?
Shops don’t have staff in attendance overnight, YMB so there’s no one to take delivery.
//just stop them going in anything other than the inside lane. //

then you'd condemn them to fetch up behind and follow mrs miggins pottering along at 35mph in her Nissan micra, causing unnecessary delays to the economy and possibly compromising the driver's hours.

Hardly ever, Bogster, except when I'm out earning a living.

Am I getting the whiff of a German car from somewhere? :-)
Increase costs for having to pay drivers to work unsocial hours
mush, "then you'd condemn them to fetch up behind and follow mrs miggins pottering along at 35mph in her Nissan micra, causing unnecessary delays to the economy and possibly compromising the driver's hours. " see my post at 10:39
No because they’d clog up smaller roads instead.
The inside lane is already there for slower moving traffic.
The link is about turning some A roads into motorways, which is a sensible idea. Very slow vehicles are banned from there for everyone’s safety, not for the purposes of allowing speed merchants free rein.
Tora has a point. Often problems occur when a lorry travelling at 59.9 mph attempts to overtake one doing 59.8 :-)
Maybe the motorways should be restricted to HGVs and towing vehicles only?
Tractors and similar can be a pain. Maybe they need more long lay-by type stretches at regular intervals where they can trundle along for a while letting folk pass.
Transport is vital to the country’s economy and wealth. Your 700 miles a week are probably not.

Got to laugh at the sheer double standard of driving 700 miles a week and then complaining about congestion.
Agricultural tractors aren't allowed on the motorway, OG, unless it is a Fastrac vehicle not registered as an agricultural vehicle.
The article wasn't just about motorways.
In Croatia, HGVs have restrictions on when they can travel on motorways and main trunk roads, particularly between June and September. This only works because they move a lot of freight by train. It simply wouldn't work here. I used to use the motorway every day to get to work and back and while they could be a nuisance at times, I learned to live with it. The biggest problem I had was lane hoppers, tailgaters and those who thought the middle and outside lanes belonged to them. I used to leave plenty of time for my journey. I remember one day on my journey back home, seeing people belting down the hard shoulder because of queuing traffic. The police pulled them all over and gave them tickets. It's the same with the morons who belt down the outside lane and pull over to leave the motorway at the last minute. Most of those I saw doing so never gained any advantage as they were continually braking and getting held up. People complain about the cost of fuel, then go down the motorway at 80mph plus, wasting fuel at a rate of knots.
sorry, ymb, but this post sounds very much like "I want to use this motorway so everyone else should clear off".

Why should you have a greater right to the roads than anyone else? In any given traffic jam, all the vehicles are contributing to the congestion.
