Apparently "whiter than white" was flagged up recently as being inappropriate!
Could this become the ultimate definition of the term whitewashing?

The phrase 'political correctness' is used to jeer at any OTT and irrelevant attempt to make an issue where none actually exists, usually for the benefit of the instigator, rather than the correction of the issue.
It does take away from the fact that daily challenges against unfairness, prejudice, manipulation of facts, oppression, and so on, are all very much part of the world in which we live, and are essential if we are to educate society as a whole to behave better.
So I would say I am against extreme and pointless examples of PC - but the concept itself is valuable and should be supported fully.

A colleague was setting up her lab for an Open Evening, she asked her volunteer pupils Who's manning this bench? A snotty Governor walking round before the start berated her, in front of the male and female pupils, for her use of the word 'manning'. I think I would have walked out.
The other evening the talk at the pub was about various TV programmes, a male was berated for referring to a woman on TV as 'a bit of all right', when I referred to a male actor as 'sex on legs' she was silent.
The general level of hypocrisy is why many can't take the trivia seriously.

Andy’s point about educating society is sound.
Through making the defamatory word for black people totally unacceptable amongst right-thinking people, a large contribution has been made to the fight against racism. Feminists, too, have managed (maybe less successfully) to stop some of the worst woman-hating terms and phrases being used in ‘everyday’ speech.
It is important that people ARE educated, and made to think twice before coming out with some racist/sexist remark.
(I don’t include you, Spicerack, of course).

In my personal life and position, i do not see inequality anywhere. So my perception of all of this noise is just people moaning. My life consists of equality for everyone involved in it. I've never seen someone not be equal for their gender, colour or anything else for that matter. Maybe that's just the area i live in..
