The Scottish Government has launched a consultation int its proposed ban on smacking children. To me it is a no brainer. How can anyone believe that teaching children that violence works as a solution is logical or sensible?

gness--- . We are always being told that violence breeds violence but this is evidently not true in your case.
You shouldn't feel ashamed with regards to 'hitting' your son all those years ago. There is a world of difference between a smack and a 'hit'. You probably did the former. A smack is usually done with an open hand but a hit is done with a closed fist.

I would never smack any human being. Its an act of violence and more often than not its in temper. If its premedidated is worse. And if adults have to smack a child as a punishment then they are not good parents or have limited intelligence.

Well that has certainly told every parent who brought up children in the 1940's.

What a totally stupid thing to say about the parents intelligence.
Times have changed, SK.
My Grandmother is 80, she was never hit and she didn't hit my mother, who in turn did not hit me. Not all 1940's parents hit their children, what an extraordinary assumption.
Yes ummmm, but not for the better. To suggest my mother was an unintelligent poor parent is not only insulting but a daft thing to say.
I have to disagree, Andres.....as I said before...the word smack is used to make hitting seem more acceptable. Both hurt....I hurt my son in anger....that's wrong and if I had continued to do it he would have been brought up to think that is how to deal with others...it's not....

Many of the adults I now read about in our court pages come as no surprise.....they were the ones I worked with who grew up in homes where hitting and swearing were used to "teach" children...x
It was bit of a silly thing to have said.

My old man was a pretty successful lawyer - he was many things, but being of limited intelligence wasn't one of them.
I would without any doubt suggest a large proportion of parents in the 1940's would mildly slap a childs leg if warranted. The most often cause would be cheek.

Look at any nature programme, the parents often rebuke their offsprings with a quick cuff.
SK - in the 40's parents didn't have the support they do now.
SK - Nature programmes? Animals can't speak!

My parents were not in need of any support. Mind you, back then certain conditions were not readily available. Autism, ADSO and the like. There has to be a reason why a selection of todays young people are more unruly than any time previous. No respect in the home, at school or to any authority.
totally agree, smacking should be a thing of the past, it certainly did me some harm, as i recall the time i was
smacked in school assembly, the shame still lives with me.
Mild slap? Isn't that also hitting and doesn't it hurt too?
SK - I meant in the way of getting advice.
It is supposed to hurt slightly, that was the idea, to make you think twice before misbehaving again.
But it doesn't work.
Nothing seems to work. I have seen many scenes of young offenders outside court laughing and joking with their mates after a stern telling off from the magistrates.

The Isle of Man birching system would be useful in certain cases.
A child falls and bumps a knee...you pick the child up for a make it better kiss and cuddle....
A child is naughty and instead of having taken the time to teach it and bring it up well you hurt it?

Odd way to bring up children....hurting them????

So a child behaves in order not to get hurt rather then learning what to do or not do?
LOl..LOL..you are a class act gness ^^^^^
totally agree with gness, don't hurt children, it's not the way to behave towards little ones.
