If they are legalised then I assume they'll have to be registered, taxed, insured etc.

There’s still a big industry producing scooters. Much much bigger than cars in certain parts of Asia. What do you think will happen if they don’t make the change? Will they survive, or go bust do you think?
How come it's illegal when mobility scooters are legal?

ZM: "What do you think will happen if they don’t make the change? Will they survive, or go bust do you think? ", who is "they" and what is "the change" - This post is about the legality of electric scooters on the streets, I am not familiar with the market for these devices etc.
There's no certainty that this company 'Bird' or any other running this sort of scheme will get the permission to have them here, but if they do then the proper rules/regs and permissions must be in place.

In other parts of the World they have simply launched the scheme without permissions and got in bother, in other areas it's working better.

I can see their usefulness in some situations but not much good if you have bags of shopping and a toddler in tow for example.
Mobility scooters don't need to be insured and are zero-rated for tax.
on the road i don't mind, but they scoot on the pavements which is a pain in the arris.
Tora, ‘they’ are to large multinationals who make the products and employ thousands of people. The ‘change’ is them producing electric vehicles instead of petrol ones to ensure they survive.
A person with a bit of nous would be able to see that the survival of these companies trumps any concerns over their legality. Especially when your trying to base their illegality on them being quiet.
Where is all the extra electricity going to come from to accommodate all these electric vehicles.

TTT i agree with you with a lot of things regarding transport and fuels. However, for electric scooters, mobility scooters, even bikes (50cc) should the UK think about getting an E lane or a "bike lane" like amsterdam? Would that help the cars keep to the roads, and these what ever they could be called (skateboarders have some funny names for scooter riders) could stick to the E lane / bike lane?
If there weren't so many cars on the road it'd be fine. As it is they'll just be a hazard, a bit like the old Sinclair C5.

If the company concerned manage to get the law changed then I would think people would buy their own scooters rather than pay the £1 unlocking charge plus 20p per minute. For that price, it's cheaper to use the bus and you can carry your shopping too.
its being trialled in the Olympic Park, so you can't go that far on them, and i believe there are only 50 in use, that was according to the news last night.
