Put simply it appears that we're back where we started, only now lacking the ability to influence decisions made by the EU whilst being governed by and beholden to that bloc. It would have been better just to abandon the whole devisive farce, putting it down to bad dream.

On March 29 next year, the United Kingdom will leave the European Union. We will then begin a new chapter in our national life. I want that to be a moment of renewal and reconciliation for our whole country. It must mark the point when we put aside the labels of “leave” or “remain” for good and we come together again as one people. To do that we need to get on with Brexit now by getting behind this deal.
Parliament will have the chance to do that in a few weeks’ time when it has a meaningful vote on the deal I hope to strike today. I will be campaigning with my heart and soul to win that vote and to deliver this Brexit deal, for the good of our United Kingdom and all of our people.

I believe that VE was posting from the point of view of Theresa May, ie, the reason behind this letter is to convince the electorate to back a dodgy deal by describing it as the best thing since sliced bread, in the hopes that they'll agree with her and press MPs into accepting it. But it only works if the electorate swallows what are, to be frank, blatant lies.
It ought not be contentious. Or divisive. Or harmful to either party.
We want to be a sovereign nation. We don't like a federal Europe run by unelected oligarchs. We don't like trade barriers by direct means like tariffs or indirect means like "standards".
We would like to stay good friends with you. We would like to continue to trade with you on good if not the same terms in our murual interest.
What is it I want my country which is so bad? Or so offensive to the EU that they can't respect such an attitude?
