When written, the song describes a back and forth between a man who wants a woman to stay at his apartment, possibly to engage in sexual intercourse.
The woman puts up a number of reasons why she would rather leave.
This issue that has recently cropped up centres on the lyrics, specifically the ones where it looks as if the woman in the song is being forced to stay (eg. "Say...what's in this drink?").
That line, as written ion 1944, would refer to alcohol, but now it's being interpreted as a reference to a date rape drug, which is impossible because men didn't use date rape drugs when the song was written.

Personally I think it's a non story. Music and song lyrics are a form of art and anyone who gets upset about artistic depictions really wants their heads looking at. The song is not saying 'It's okay lads go out with some Rohypnol and date rape a girl'- it's a quirky little song written a very long time ago, and the routinely upset need to find something more sensible to get upset about.
SP: "When written, the song describes a back and forth between a man who wants a woman to stay at his apartment, possibly to engage in sexual intercourse." - that's about 50% of pop songs and 90% of love songs!
